### Epic Games shows some of its cracks.

At a time in video gaming where it seems that the hype bubble only leads to disappointments and where studios have teams dedicated to crafting the worst possible decisions for players it seems that no one is safe from making the occasional bad move on the board, this time it was the turn of one of the biggest developers in the industry right now, Epic Games has made a reputation with titles like Fortnite and I have at more than one point commented on their weekly free games program, but it seems that everything is faltering.

This morning I woke up to the news that Epic Games just fired a huge proportion of their workforce, 16% if we go by Bloomberg's estimated data, this affects about a hundred workers in various areas, the internal discourse seems to be that they spent more than they earned, that seems to be the norm many times in this kind of big studios, but there may also be something else.

The central focus goes to Fortnite of course, the biggest product Epic has ever had by a long way, all the time they are investing in content, events, new dynamics, items, skins and much much much more, it's an expense that very few companies can afford to sustain for long, and apparently it's now Epic's turn to do damage control.

There are also the recent developments that have been made on Unreal Engine that despite being one of the most used engines in the video game takes a considerable part of the efforts of the company, it seems that all this line of production will not be touched by these reforms.

But something that has surprised me is that the Fall Guys studio seems to be definitely closed and the work of the game will be put in charge of another studio, remembering that the studio that created this game was bought by Epic not many years ago in the pandemic when the game exploded in popularity.

Some statements have not been expected, although it remains to be seen what public statement Epic makes about all this I think one of the feelings that live behind the scenes is that they have spent much more than they have generated profits, many notice it with the loss of trend that has had Fortnite compared to its years of greater reach as well as the competition today is fierce and does not seem to slow down.

Since those years where Fortnite was a feast with players have come to market equally attractive proposals with the same business model of this title, a Free To Play full of content where the expense that is lived daily between the creation of content and servers is huge and every day they are looking for more and more collaborations with other known players, but it is difficult to surprise when you've already done practically everything.

I think these layoffs have also been a recurring theme in many companies today and not only in the video game, although to name a few we can say that Ubisoft and Embracer Group have done the same relatively recently with a good part of several of its studios, there is a correction that had not been seen before in the video game and at least for workers are coming turbulent times.
