In an effort to improve my fitness, I decided to research into more exercise routines and everything that can help contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Over the last few months I have shifted from a mainly sedentary lifestyle to one that allows me adequate time to be active and work on healthy living. Healthy living is a lifestyle and this was perhaps one of the best decisions I could have taken in my career. Spending less time at the desk was just the beginning however and I decided to start getting into fitness using some modern day wearable day tech.

Enter the Fitbit era. There are so many wearable tech pieces to choose from now. The apple watch is regarded as one of the best solution for fitness advocates but I am an android user, for obvious reasons ;) I spent an extensive amount of time researching what features were essential for me and what platform I wanted to use. I decided that Fitbit was the way to go as a friend showed off some of the cool features that are available. Recording my workout intensity was key and I wanted something with an accurate heart sensor that I could wear all day without being intrusive. The wrist solution was great and I was particularly interested in understanding where my baseline performance lies and how I would improve over time. Sleep tracking is also an amazing feature that I cannot go without anymore. It’s easy to lose track of sleep quality, in fact I don’t I’ve ever been able to analyse the quality of my sleep. It has been great to understand how light or deep the quality of my sleep is. Sleeping plays a great role in body recovery after workouts and I’ve been using this data to discover ways of improved sleep quality.

I chose the Fitbit Versa because I wanted a smart watch and could do without the chunkiness that the ionic offers. I have a relative smaller wrist and the lower profile of the Versa suited me quite well. The inclusion of offline music is amazing too, simply linking my Bluetooth headphones to it and I suddenly have music on the go without my phone! The only drawback that I might find about this is its lack of GPS, it will tether to a phone for GPS access. For outdoor runners this will be a major consideration but I can make do without that feature.

To keep a track of everything, I also populate my diet into the Fitbit app on a daily basis to gauge my calorie deficit. Weight loss and better fitness is my goal and this has been doing wonders for tracking my macros. I have been able to see my progress over the last few weeks using a smart scale also. There are a few choices that will allow syncing with a Fitbit account, I opted for the slightly less expensive Nokia Body + scale (formerly Withings) and it was a breeze to setup and delivers my weight and body fat readings into Fitbit. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and highly recommended some sort of wearable tech to anyone who wants to track things in a more interactive and modern way.
