Birch are one of my favorite trees, so when I heard that [Jesup Path in Acadia National  Park, Maine](https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/acadia-national-park-jesup-path-and-hemlock-road-loop) was loaded with birch, well, I just had to hike it.  It was beautiful.

And a little known fact about birch bark:  it's easily stripped from a fallen tree with a pocket knife and the oils contained in the bark make it an excellent fire starter, even when damp. Birch bark has been referred to as Nature's napalm.
