One of the things that keep us in constant relationship with God is not just prayer but obedience. It is what the Lord looks out for in a person who wants to walk with the Lord.

In the sight of God obedience is better than any sacrifice that a person to give to Him, it is a hallmark of people who fears the Lord and want to serve Him perfectly. 

A person will find it so hard to obey God if that person cannot let go of his own will to let the will of God prevail. There is no way we can obey God if it all about our will, the moment our will precede that of God is the moment we will disobey and will not follow God's given statutes. 

At a point in the Life of Jesus when he was in an agony(mental struggles) he was left with two options; whether to choose his own will of avoiding the the pain, shame, disgrace and the painful death on the Cross or to let God's will prevail so that he will die for mankind.  

 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
Saying, Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done.  And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.  And being in agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Matthew 22:41-44

This was indeed the difficult moment in the life of Jesus Christ where he was at a crossroad and needed to chose whether to carry out his mission or boycott it.
 
He could have chosen to enjoy the pleasures of this life,    the praises, honour and all the riches he could received if he had yelled to the devil's sweet offer the mount. Jesus humbled himself and learn. 

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not a thing to be grasped to be equal with God:  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.  Therefore God also has highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:5-12
