When I opened up my messenger app I saw that my hubby had sent me a recipe for these yummy oven baked potato cakes. Opening the recipe I instantly saw the areas that would need tweaking and figured we could add it to the food rotation. Suddenly I realized that there was going to be a problem with any left over mash potatoes in our house for my husband doctors the recipe: he adds sour cream and half and half.

That extra liquid would need to be accounted for so I was just cementing the last pieces of my tweaking when I told my husband my plan. When I came to the part of the recipe describing the potatoes, I used the word normal. Immediately my hubby starting responding to me in an unexpected way until I realized he was thinking I inferred the word ABnormal.

He rationalized that if his potatoes were not normal then they had to be abnormal. Why is that? Why can’t they simply be not normal?

Why was the first perspective he choose to see himself as doing something wrong or substandard? Did you do the same? How many times do you think something is wrong with you? What if you, like him, didn't even see the other possibilities? Why do we try so hard to be normal? Isn’t excellent not normal? What about spectacular? How about my personal favorite unbelievable??

News flash all: no one is normal and that’s the whole point; it's good stuff.
