Living life is more than just getting through the days. Far beyond working to meet our most basic daily needs, we must interact with people and with the ecosystem around us, affecting lives, changing paths. We do this constantly, and partly unconsciously. We lack clarity that any action we take, no matter how insignificant it may seem, can trigger effects beyond our control for others.

Think of that "good morning" you gave to a stranger, which might have been a spark of happiness for someone who was suffering.

Also think about that person in need whom you ignored.

And think about the day you were late for an appointment and blamed "the traffic," even though that wasn't exactly what happened. After all, **a little lie wouldn’t hurt anyone**, right?

# Everybody Lies

A phrase immortalized by the character *Dr. House* in the television series of the same name, *everybody lies* is a realization that humanity develops intertwined with lies. We're not considering here when in childhood the *switch flips* that makes the developing human begin to integrate into the great group of truth-benders. We accept that it will happen, sooner or later, and without exception.

Since lying is widespread in human interactions, it makes sense to reflect on whether there is a *limit where it is tolerable*, or a moment when lying is not harmful. If there were a moment when someone could consciously choose to lie, could that person still be called *conscious*? Or would they actually be seeking the opposite: fleeing full consciousness?

# Lies Have Short Legs

This title is a Brazilian proverb, and it reflects the idea that lies, in general, don’t last long; they are discovered and suppressed by the truth. But that's not quite the case in the real world — we probably don’t know the truth about some things, and they will remain that way, without ever being revealed. Think of committed crimes, murders, and so many other disasters.

We cannot measure a lie by how long it lasts, overshadowing the truth.

# Do Lies Have Size?

Can we evaluate the size of one lie in comparison to another? Does this comparison relate to how many facts were altered, or how much damage the lie caused? Would there be a tolerable limit of damage for a lie to be acceptable?

> Elderly patient, terminal cancer, asks the doctor how much time they have left.

What would you do? Would you lie, give false hope?

# Conclusion

I believe yes, it is possible to tolerate some lies whose purpose is to avoid greater pain. As in the patient example above, I am tolerant of giving hope and allowing them to face the end of life with some light in their eyes. Similarly, when we see a car accident, for example, where one person dies and another is in the hospital asking for information. In this case, if informed about the death, I believe it could trigger physical and emotional reactions that would harm the treatment of the surviving person, so I am tolerant of responding evasively and delaying the communication of the truth.

I can’t think of other examples now, but I’m very curious to hear your thoughts!

Aos meu sempre amigos da comunidade *HiveLearners*, minhas melhores saudações!

Viver a vida é mais do que passar pelos dias. Muito além de trabalhar para buscar o sustento diário das nossas necessidades mais básicas, precisamos interagir com as pessoas e com o ecossistema ao nosso redor, afetando vidas, mudando caminhos. Fazemos isso de forma permanente, e em parte de forma inconsciente. Não temos a clareza que qualquer ação que tomamos, por mais insignificante que pareça, pode desencadear efeitos fora de nosso controle para outrem.

Pense naquele "bom dia" que você deu para um estranho, e que pode ter sido uma faísca de felicidade para uma pessoa que estava em sofrimento.

Pense também naquela pessoa necessitada que você ignorou.

E pense no dia em que você se atrasou para um compromisso e culpou "o trânsito", mesmo não tendo sido exatamente isso que aconteceu. Afinal, **uma pequena mentira não causaria nenhum mal**, certo?

# Todo mundo mente

Frase eternizada pelo personagem *Dr House*, em série televisiva de mesmo nome, *todo mundo mente* é uma constatação que a humanidade se desenvolve de forma entrelaçada com mentiras. Não estamos aqui considerando em que momento da infância ocorre a *virada de chave* que faz com que o projeto de ser humana passe a integrar o grande grupo dos corruptores da verdade. Aceitamos que isso irá ocorrer, cedo ou tarde, e sem exceção.

Como a mentira é generalizada nas interações humanas, então faz sentido refletir que exista um *limite onde ela é tolerável*, ou um momento onde mentir não seja danoso. Se existisse um momento onde alguém pudesse fazer a opção consciente pela mentira, essa pessoa poderia ser chamada de *consciente*? Ou ela estaria justamente em busca do oposto: em fuga da plena consciência?

# Mentira tem perna curta

Esse título é um ditado popular brasileiro, e reflete que em modo geral uma mentira não se sustenta por muito tempo, ela é descoberta e suprimida pela verdade. Não é bem assim no mundo real, provavelmente não sabemos a verdade sobre algumas coisas e assim permanecerá, sem a revelação da verdade. Pense em crimes cometidos, assassinatos, e tantas outras catástrofes. 

Não podemos mensurar a mentira pelo tempo que ela se perpetua, ofuscando a verdade.

# Mentira tem tamanho?

Podemos olhar para o tamanho de uma mentira, em comparação com outra? Essa comparação diz respeito em quantos fatos foram alterados, ou em quanto dano a mentira causou? Existiria um limite de dano tolerável para mentira ser permitida?

> Paciente idoso, câncer terminal, pergunta pera o médico quanto tempo de vida ainda tem.

O que você faria? Mentiria, daria falsas esperanças?

# Conclusão

Eu acredito que sim, é possível tolerar algumas mentiras cujo objetivo sejam evitar dores maiores. Como no exemplo do paciente logo acima, eu tenho tolerância a dar esperança e permitir que encontre o fim da sua vida com algum brilho nos olhos. Da mesma forma quando vemos um acidente de carro, por exemplo, em que uma pessoa perde a vida e a outra pessoa está no hospital sendo atendida e pedindo informações. Neste caso se for comunicada a morte eu acredito que possa desencadear reações físicas e emocionais que iriam prejudicar o atendimento da pessoa, então eu tenho tolerância a responder de forma evasiva e adiar a comunicação da verdade.

Não sei pensar em outras coisas, mas fico muito curioso com a sua resposta!
