The end of year festivities are approaching and this past weekend we carried out the most awaited family activity: we put up the Christmas tree. In Brazil we have the habit of using artificial Christmas trees, which can be dismantled and reused endlessly, or even get bored with the decoration. We started the mission with the most brutal task of all, which fell to me: locating the boxes in the attic. Our attic is just the space between the roof and the lining of the house, and is not a habitable place. Using a ladder, I access the inhospitable environment and soon find myself among balls, bows, stars, ribbons and other decorative materials, which are promptly moved to the ground. The objective is achieved when I locate the most desired box, and the tree is taken to the ground, where I make the roughest fittings and connections. At this point, the task is passed on to the team who will handle the following: decoration. Led by their skilled mother, the girls are the ideal workforce for the tireless work of hanging the decorations. The leader's attentive eyes do not allow for mistakes, and each red ball must be positioned at a pre-determined distance and constantly monitored by her millimetric vision. I return to the battlefield when the electrical sector is in demand, and I install the lighting with all the expertise of a father. One last step is necessary: transport to the final location. At this moment, something unforeseen always occurs, such as the fall of an ornament, and even the breaking of something poorly fixed. Then the repair team comes into action: the father uses his super glue and sorts out the final details. I'm very happy with this approach and I have plans to put lots of little gifts (simple and cheap) with each passing day. As festas de fim de ano estão chegando e neste último final de semana realizamos a atividade familiar mais aguardada: montamos a árvore de natal. No Brasil temos o costume de utilizar árvores de natal artificiais, que podem ser desmontadas e reaproveitadas infinitamente, ou até enjoar da decoração. Começamos missão com a tarefa mais bruta de todas, que coube a mim: localizar as caixas no sótão. Nosso sótão é apenas o espaço entre o telhado e o forro da casa, não sendo um lugar habitável. Utilizando uma escada, acesso o ambiente inóspito e logo me vejo em meio à bolas, laços, estrelas, fitas e outros materiais decorativos, que são prontamente deslocados até o solo. O objetivo é alcançado quando localizo a caixa mais desejada, e a árvore é levada até o solo, onde realizo os encaixes e conexões mais brutos. Neste momento a tarefa é repassada à equipe que dará o tratamento a seguir: decoração. Chefiadas pelas habilidosa mãe, as meninas são a força de trabalho ideal para o incansável trabalho de pendurar os enfeites. Os olhos atentos da líder não permitem erros, e cada bola vermelha deve estar posicionada à uma distância pré-determinada e constantemente fiscalizada por sua visão milimétrica. Retorno ao campo de batalha quando o setor elétrico é demandado, e realizo a instalação da iluminação com toda perícia de pai. Um último passo é necessário: o transporte ao local definitivo. Neste momento sempre ocorre algum imprevisto, como a queda de algum enfeite, e até mesmo a quebra de alguma coisa mal fixada. Então a equipe de reparos entra em ação: o pai utiliza sua super cola e resolve os detalhes finais.
