Wednesday we started in our church's bible lesson with Genesis 1:1. I had the honor to give an introduction to the first book of the bible and lead through the discussion. 

I've had always some difficulties with that latin expression "ex nihilo" but due to the biblical data I have to believe that there wasn't any preexisting eternal material or any other stuff. The only thing eternal is God. On the other hand, we can't equate the creation with the creator. There is an infinit distinction which only God himself had the power to overcome through the incarnation in Jesus Christ. 

So what is the right view?

I think Acts 17,28 is very important. It shows that everything happens in some way within God. There is no outside of God in some sense. God is omnipresent. At the same time there is a real distinction and everything really had a beginning and came to be in the course of six 24h days. I think this is unavoidable thaught in Ex 20:11. 

Also we are said that there actually was something everything was made of:

Heb 11:3 ISV 
>By faith we understand that time was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are invisible.

So if I follow all of that, I have to say that ex nihilo is true in the sense that there was no preexisting stuff so that God would have only reformed it. On the other hand it is false because everything came from something that is invisible. 

What are your thoughts on that?
