I've recently discovered [Liberapay](https://liberapay.com), which is an alternative for Patreon, run by a non-profit organization. They have slightly different functionality than Patreon, but the end goal is much the same, rewarding creators for their work. One great feature is that they do not charge any fees for using their platform, only payment processor fees are charged.

Liberapay mentions on their website that their service is targeted at providing free software projects with a crowd funded basic income for their contributors. In reality, anyone can make use of their service and it could become a viable alternative for all sorts of creators.

Currently, most of the people and projects that make use of Liberapay are tied to the free software community. You'll find some of the most well known open-source software among the projects listed.

# No Contributor Rewards

Since [Liberapay](https://liberapay.com) is primarily a *donation* driven platform, there is no option for giving out rewards to your contributors. This is what makes them different to Patreon, as donations cannot be made in exchange for some sort of compensation. 

This makes Liberapay less of a hassle when you just want to accept small donations, but are not looking to make a business out of it. Individuals or organizations who are offering a valuable service free of charge can easily receive compensation for it.

# Conclusion
I'm hoping that they'll become more popular among people who are contributing to open-source projects, but also to regular creators who are having trouble getting monetized in other ways. This could very well go hand in hand with something like #utopian-io, since their goals are pretty much the same. 

Payment methods are lacking a bit, with the only options being bank transfer and credit/debit card payments, but they mention adding more in the future.
