Returnal refers to your health levels as suit integrity. Keeping your integrity at reasonable levels is no easy task since it doesn't recharge on its own. There are various ways to restore your suit integrity, but the main thing is to not take damage in the first place. Staying out of the way of enemy fire is essential to lasting long during each cycle in Returnal. Jumping, sprinting, and dodging are each integral. One other extremely important part of lasting long would be the use of your weapon of choice. So far I have used three different types of weapons in Returnal. You start each cycle with Selene's Sidearm SD-M8, which is a pistol. I have also used a Spitmaw Blaster aka shotgun and a Tachyomatic Carbine aka machine gun. All have been so fun to use and offer plenty of variety. There are more weapons that I have yet to get my hands on, but even with these first three, I am impressed. Each new weapon will be randomly found somewhere in the environment while exploring. You never know what will be where, so it is best to look everywhere. Weapons will have one of several different traits, which make them behave differently. Weapons also come with a secondary fire which totally changes the gun and will be useful in different types of situations. You increase your weapon proficiency the more you use a certain weapon, but sometimes swapping out a weapon you have been using for a while for an already high-proficiency weapon will be worth it. Other times, the trade-off won't be beneficial, it depends on your play style. To sum all of this up, the weapons in Returnal are fucking awesome! The DualSense controller makes them all feel so fun to use. There is one other major thing that the controller allows. The L2 trigger is how you aim in with your weapon, but it is not like every other game. If you always press the trigger, you will simply aim in. If you fully pull the trigger, you will activate your secondary fire.
