It appears in a new study that there are strong indications that mammals were nocturnal up until the dinosaurs went extinct. Perhaps something happened with the extinction of the dinosaurs that provoked mammals to become active in the day? Or perhaps the extinction event which led to the dinosaurs benefited certain species more than others tipping the balance in favor of daytime activity? The only thing the researchers have discovered a correlation but causation remains unknown. Even the correlation remains uncertain as we weren't able to observe the activity of these mammals to know what really happened.
