I've been returning to my recorders and whistles lately, and trying to get some folk tunes under my belt. One of them is this first tune, Tam Lin, aka the Glasgow Reel. I can't quite play it this fast yet on my current weapon of choice (a Mollenhauer Dream tenor recorder) but I'm getting there. One of its titles refers to a well-known folk tale about Tam Lin, a young man who gets kidnapped by the Fairy Queen and has to be rescued by his girlfriend, the redoubtable Janet:

I started learning the tune just before Halloween, when Janet (according to the ballad of Tam Lin) has to ambush the Fairy Folk at Miles Cross to win her long-distance lover and father of her baby back from the clutches of the Fairy Queen. The roses in Carterhaugh (an actual place in the Scottish Borders roughly [here](///freedom.segregate.iterative)) are her connection to Tam Lin:

That last version omits the verses that you get in the Fairport Convention recording, which includes the Fairy Queen getting angry when Janet snatches Tam Lin back from among her company, cursing her to die an ill death.

Some of you may know the Fairport version better, but it's pretty easy to find on YouTube so you can always go and find it if  you want it. 

This German-language version by Faun, on the other hand, gives you some of the back story as well as the rescue involving his transformations into various animals, so I'm going to give you their version for my third tune for #ThreeTuneTuesday tonight (it also has a very good whistle solo):
