*Topic: God’s Indignation*

*Bible Reading: Nahum 1: 1–6 (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®. Copyright © 2016 by Crossway Bibles)*

1. An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.

2. The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies.

3. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

4. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers.

5. The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it.

6. Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.

*Word for Today: _Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him._ – v. 6.*

*Inspiring Commentary:*

How can a loving God bring wrath upon the people He created in His image? In Secondary School days, one evening when we ought to be observing our preps, we sat down in a room chatting with some friends. All of a sudden, one of our teachers came into the room and started whipping us. Now this teacher is one of the gentle and very religious in the school and was loved by students. The reason for his action was that WAEC (West African Examination Council) just released the results of the previous set of students and the rate of failure was unprecedented and he wanted us to take our studies seriously.

Our God is indeed slow to anger and is willing to forgive. However, He definitely cannot acquit the wicked. The city of Nineveh repented at the preaching of Jonah but became extremely wicked soon afterward. This time around, the city is doomed for God’s wrath. This justice will mean comfort to the righteous Judah, and Israel who were already in Assyrian captivity.

We need to realize as Christians that every act of disobedience against God will be brought to justice except it is repented of, and every act of obedience will equally be rewarded.

*Prayer:* Lord, help me to remember that you will judge every sin in light of your faithfulness.
