UC Berkeley. Starts free speech movement in 1964. Ends free speech movement in 2017

Oct 5, 2014. This week marks the 50th anniversary of the Free Speech Movement at the University of California, Berkeley.

That movement launched the massive sit-ins and protests that would help define a generation of student activism across the country. 50 years ago, before the Free Speech Movement, UC students were barred from distributing flyers about the major issues of the day. In 1964, it was the civil rights struggle."It was the passion that fueled the Free Speech Movement," says Lynn Hollander Savio, who was a senior at Berkeley in October of 1964.

This year, the university is hosting a series of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the FREE SPEECH MOVEMENT. There's no doubt that many students today appreciate the activism that came before them.

The No Free Speech Movement at Berkeley

The cancellation Wednesday of a speech by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos at UC Berkeley was, according to a university spokesman, “not a proud night for this campus, the home of the free speech movement.” That’s putting it mildly. Even if the cancellation was justified by concerns about public safety after an outbreak of violence and property destruction, the fact that Yiannopoulos was prevented from speaking to a willing audience of campus Republicans should make supporters of free speech shiver.

The university insists that it made elaborate preparations for protests. It canceled the speech only after what it called an “unprecedented” invasion of the campus by “more than 100 armed individuals clad all in black” who engaged in violent, destructive behavior. They hurled metal barricades, threw Molotov cocktails and smashed windows at the student union. Yiannopoulos wrote on Facebook: “One thing we do know for sure: the Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down.”

So UC Berkeley bends the knee to a violent Antifa group from the left, that are clad in black, hooded, hidden, throwing Molotov cocktails (bombs), and intimidating the officials of the university.

The site that was the beginning of the FREE SPEECH MOVEMENT, caves into to violent Antifa left extremists, and is not ground zero for THE END OF FREE SPEECH.

Please upvote if you believe this was NOT a proud day for UC Berkeley. And left wing Antifa extremism needs to be stopped.

STEEM On!!
