## BOINC OS Minimal Announcement
---
Merry Christmas everyone, the following post is an announcement of the alpha for the BOINC OS Minimal spin, but most importantly the fact that development will be back on track for approximately the next month. The majority of the information about this minimal spin exists in a [previous post](https://steemit.com/boinc/@delta1512/boincos-developer-update-upcoming-minimal-spin) so the following will be what's coming next and where the Beta will begin.

The holidays are here and I expect to have the base systems cemented with development started on the BOINC OS helpers for each system by the end of late January.

## Current State of the System
---
In alpha v1.0, the user gets the base system which includes BOINC itself, a command-line based BOINC manager, simple networking and a firewall. In this state there is really nothing much to do other than boot up and run BOINC. The user is able to customise the firewall however networking options are currently limited until appropriate software infrastructure is in place.

Remote administration is currently available via SSH and functions perfectly, not even requiring a computer screen to access the OS.

Seems pretty bare-bones, but the installed system itself is around 2 GB which is probably the most it'd get and I am definitely excited to continue to develop additional functionality.

## Now What's Next?
---
### Better Networking:
We will see the introduction of more intuitive networking configuration in addition to Wi-Fi support within the next version. For this system, networking is crucial so more work will be done in this department.

### User Interactivity and Helper Staging:
Development will commence on the BOINC OS Minimal helper in regards to planning the construction of the software to be used. I expect this to be developed in python and will include functionality such as interactive system monitoring/system report generation, user tutorial/guide and a system control and configuration interface.

### Beta Release:
I plan for the release of the beta for BOINC OS Minimal when it gains all of its features, i.e, when it can run BOINC effectively, is well tested, contains the base helper software and networking functionality and security is cemented. From then on, work will be done in accessibility and localisation regards.

## Conclusion
---
We're almost half-way to a complete set of systems and the gateway for new and unaware users to be introduced to distributed scientific computing. Thanks to all you guys backing this development and to those who have tested and given feedback.
