"It's Common Sense!" Or... There's Nothing "Common" About Sense

In a sense, the heading says it all.

As I wander through life, I find myself watching people and what they attempt to do... and I think to myself "OMG! What are they DOING? They could be doing it this other way instead... that's just common sense!"

Of course, the truth is that just because something makes sense to me doesn't mean that it makes sense to anyone else.

In fact, things that make sense to me seldom make sense to the rest of the world... except in an "after the fact" sort of way when people end up scratching their heads and saying "Yanno, if we'd done it the way he'd originally suggested, it would have been a lot less hassle."

There's Nothing "Common" About Sense...

That statement actually does hold true on a couple of levels.

Many of us walk around with the belief that most of the world doesn't make much sense... and we see things being mismanaged, mishandled and screwed up and we make the assessment that "people lack common sense," because they failed to realize that a square peg doesn't fit into a round hole. Truth be known, most people either don't know-- or care-- about how they approach half of what they undertake. That's one.

But then there's the fact that there are loads of people in this world... and they tend to have all sorts of different approaches to living life... so even expecting there to be something "common" there is just plain silly.

Maybe I'm the one who's messed up for thinking there is a "common" approach to anything. Then again, I could be right because I had "critical thinking" pounded into my head since age five. And-- last but not least-- my lifetime of striving for "efficiency" in all things is informed by my natural inclination to be a lazy bum.

IS There a "Common" Sense?

Some years ago, our sons were very excited about going to a particular concert at a club in Chicago. Of course, when they got there, they discovered that it was an "adults only" venue, so the 20-year old couldn't get in. In my world "common sense" would dictate establishing such facts before you even consider buying tickets.

A friend of our found the most amazing refrigerator for a steal of a price on Craigslist. "Common sense" would dictate that you-- especially as a 40-something adult-- measure the size of your door openings before buying a fridge it then turns out you can't get into your house.

Another person I know was lamenting that she lost money on what was clearly a very risky investment. In spite of knowing that, she was still completely surprised at the loss. "Common sense" means taking the time to fully understand what you're getting into...

But are such things really common sense? Or are we just looking at examples of people having different life experiences-- leading them to know some things, and not others... no matter how "common" we may feel they are?

What do YOU think? Is there such a thing as "common sense," or is everything just a bunch of "individual" sense? Do you sometimes wonder how otherwise functionally adult people can not know certain things that seem very basic to you? Do you think it's just the result of different life experiences? Leave a comment-- share your experiences-- start the conversation!
