As 2021 is coming to an end and I have been thinking about more about the future and where I want to go with my photography, I have come to the conclusion that I need to get back to where I was when I first started photography. And by that, I mean, I need to push myself a lot more and try to learn more about photography.

I took these photos when I was first getting into photography and had only had a camera for about two months. I knew nothing about lighting and had barely learned how to use my camera on manual mode.

It was really fun coming up with an idea for a photo shoot and then getting all the different things to make it work out. For this shoot, I bought some pretty cheap lights off of Amazon and set them up in our garage. I had no idea how to properly light, so I looked up a bunch of things on YouTube and tried to learn as much as I could.

One of my friends was an effects artist and made Halloween props, so I had asked him if he wanted to collab together and I would give him some of the photos to promote his effects line. So he made a mold for the neck piece to make it look like my wife's neck had been chopped open.

All of these photos were used for the final project in my beginners photography class. Everyone else was showing pictures they took of flowers or some other boring stuff that beginners do. Let's just say that mine was the complete opposite of what my professor had expected, but he and the whole class loved the images. That was when I fell in love with photography and how I could use my camera to tell stories.

So I started to learn as much as I could about Photoshop and watched so many different videos about editing and creating different effects to help tell stories.

We tried all sorts of spooky things and had a ton of fun. My daughter loved being part of the different pictures that I was taking and seeing the end results of what I was creating.

This one was a ton of fun to create. I had a lamp on the ground shining the light up at my daughter so that her shadow was on the wall. This photo was actually pretty easy to create using several different images layered onto each other and masking out different parts of it. Then I added a layer of fog to give it a spooky atmosphere and then edited the colors of my wife's skin to make her a witch and give her red glowing eyes.

I began experimenting with shutterspeed and light to create a series of lightning images that have sold really well on some stock photo websites. Too bad we don't get many storms like this where I live because it would be so much fun to do more storm photography.

For these images, I was playing around with black lighting and different colored highlighters.

I really like how they all turned out and I will need to recreate them again now that I understand a lot more about how to use my camera and lighting.

As I was looking back at all my photos, I think the thing that really made them stand out was that I was super motivated to learn and push myself into creating. Over the years, I feel I have gotten a bit complacent with my photography and just fell into a groove of what I felt was comfortable.

I am hoping that I can get some more inspiration like I had back when I was first starting out. When I was first into photography, I would take photos of just about everything, but over the years, I have taken less and less photos, and I think part of that was that I was learning so many different rules in photography and I stopped challenging those rules.

So my goal for 2022 is to try and get back to my roots in photography and start breaking the rules again and push myself creatively. Because, rules are meant to be broken.
