Weekend engagement 193: An unexpected act of kindness.

A little over a decade ago my life was changed by the arrival of a mixed breed dog, half Rottweiler, he was not aggressive, but a very playful and full of energy dog, since his arrival home at only three months old his imposing size and weight contrasted with his docile attitude, every morning I took him out to the patio of the house where he spent most of the day, although I went to play with him whenever I could, one day, during one of my routine visits something unusual happened to me. He caught my attention, instead of welcoming me with his usual enthusiasm he was in a corner of the house emitting grunts, as I approached I discovered to my surprise that he had a small pigeon between his legs that he was plucking.

The shock paralyzed me for a moment, however I reacted quickly and firmly but without violence I took the pigeon from between its legs, the poor pigeon was visibly affected, with blows and a superficial wound on one of its wings that prevented it from flying, At that moment my protective instinct was activated, I took the pigeon inside the house and examined it carefully, fortunately the wound was not serious so I decided to become its temporary caretaker until it fully recovered, I got a cage and I conditioned so that the pigeon felt comfortable.

During the following weeks I dedicated myself to feeding her birdseed and other bird foods. She, for her part, behaved docile and very calm, allowing me to pet her and check on her from time to time without any problem. Unfortunately at that time I was not so fond of documenting my experiences with photos or videos, today I regret not having captured images of that little pigeon that became my protégé.

The weeks passed and little by little the pigeon's wing was healing, finally the day came when it was ready to fly again, I remember perfectly that afternoon, with its cool atmosphere and a sky that turned orange while I held the pigeon. the dove in my hands, I gently pushed it towards the wind, watching with excitement as it rose strongly.

That experience left me with deep satisfaction, seeing the little dove fly free after having cared for it and helped it recover was an invaluable reward, it gave me a lesson in kindness and compassion that I will never forget and I was deeply moved by the resilience and spirit indomitable of this little creature.
