Located in the Kaohsiung Port area, "Dagang Warehouse" is one of the city’s newer attractions that blends history, culture, and creativity. It seems like it used to be part of an old warehouse complex. When I walked inside, I saw that it still had its original red brick walls and steel beams. It is totally giving off that vintage industrial vibe. Scattered throughout were cafés, small local brand shops, and creative select stores. But the best part? The air conditioning inside was super cool. Kaohsiung’s sun is seriously brutal. I was about to melt.

While wandering around, I noticed a bunch of Snoopy-themed art installations. I thought, “Wait, is there a Snoopy exhibit going on?” But it turns out it was just a pop-up store inside Dagang Warehouse. I’ve been to quite a few pop-up stores before, and over time, I’ve come to understand what they’re all about. Basically, they use this “limited-time-only” strategy to grab people’s attention. The whole idea of it being temporary and having limited items kind of creates this pressure, like “if you miss it, it’s gone.” It pushes people to decide and buy faster. And if the store doesn’t attract enough interest, they just pack up and leave — which helps avoid the cost and risk of running a long-term store. No wonder pop-up shops are popping up everywhere lately.

I’ve mentioned before that I have a friend who’s a big fan of Snoopy merch. So I figured I’d get her a souvenir. I stayed in the pop-up for a while and was really tempted by the mystery box stuff. But then I thought — what if I end up getting a character she doesn’t like, like Charlie Brown instead of Snoopy? That’d be awkward. So in the end, I just bought a Snoopy figure directly.

There was also a select shop themed around the ocean. It sold stationery, decorations, and handmade accessories inspired by the harbor. I chatted with the shop owner, and they said most of the designs came from Kaohsiung’s sea breeze and ship culture. Honestly, Kaohsiung used to be all about heavy industry, but in recent years, places like the Pier-2 Art Center have attracted a lot of creative people. What used to be kind of a cultural desert is now totally different. But at the same time, I feel like all this creativity and development has driven prices up. That part I’m not a fan of.
