Another Reason For Graphene: Mosquito Bites

Scientists have recently discovered that graphene might be helpful in stopping mosquitoes from biting you because the graphene acts as a shield, *blocking the ability of the mosquitoes to sense certain molecules* [that would trigger a bite](https://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode/graphene-garment-blocks-blood-sucking-skeeters/).

Graphene has already made its way into the clothing market, but this is just <b>one more application</b>, where graphene has showed possibility for helping to solve yet another problem.

> “Mosquitoes are important vectors for disease all over the world, and there’s a lot of interest in non-chemical mosquito bite protection,” - [senior author Professor R. Hurt, Brown University](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/graphene-clothes-mosquito-bites-stop-malaria-study-diseases-a9080441.html).

Researchers have been working with different fabrics and incorporating graphene into the mix, finding that it helps to act as a barrier against toxic chemicals. This prompted them to consider whether or not it might be helpful with protecting against mosquitoes too, and they were right on their hunch.

## Researchers concluded that the graphene essentially acts as a chemical barrier that <b>prevents mosquitoes [from sensing when someone is there](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/graphene-clothes-mosquito-bites-stop-malaria-study-diseases-a9080441.html)</b>.

<center></center>The *graphene oxide film* or 'GO film' they were using does become less effective when it gets wet though, so scientists will be looking to find a way to <b>[stabilize the graphene](https://www.engadget.com/2019/08/27/graphene-mosquito-repellent-boston-university-study/)</b> so that the material can remain strong even when it gets wet.

Ultimately, graphene could make its way further into the clothing market if the potential here for mosquito prevention is further explored and commercialized. Still, [researchers say that more](https://gizmodo.com/adding-graphene-to-fabrics-turns-it-into-a-perfect-forc-1837611711) research on [the topic is needed](https://www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech/graphene-film-fights-off-mosquito/).

Graphene has also previously showed promise with helping to <b>keep you cool</b>, with some looking to make graphene-based products like denim [jackets that might be able to keep people cooler in hot climates](https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/try-graphene-a-new-clothing-material-that-can-keep-you-cool/article25901581.ece).

One graphene jacket [has already been released](https://www.dezeen.com/2018/08/16/vollebak-graphene-jacket-radiator-conduct-power-clothing-design/) that can conduct power by storing body heat and it repels bacteria. Graphene is making its way into gloves, helmets, [jackets, and more](https://www.fastcompany.com/90205090/the-first-graphene-jacket-is-here-and-its-magical).

> “Our view is that wearable technology will become increasingly invisible over the next 10 to 20 years,... Instead of wearing it over your eyes or on your wrist, it will be embedded as clothing and tech simply merge. We think graphene’s ability to conduct heat and power and withstand insane forces, while adding zero mass, should make it central to the story. And when clothing can start conducting heat and electricity [all sorts of cool things can start happening](https://www.fastcompany.com/90205090/the-first-graphene-jacket-is-here-and-its-magical). It means that over the next decade your clothing can start to become a platform for other innovations. And that’s really what we’re interested in.” - S Tidball, co-founder of Vollebak, the maker behind the graphene jacket.

### Over time it is expected that graphene will help to set new standards and truly make some revolutionary changes in the way of smart clothing technology.
<center></center> From helping to boost sports performance or assist in solving problems with mosquitoes, the material has already [proven to be versatile](https://www.wired.co.uk/article/latest-fashion-trends-technology-2018) and it's easy to see how it will be able to add value in many ways to a variety of industries.
