UK Drone Swarms Expected To Be Unveiled By 2020

Various companies today, such as Lockheed Martin, Intel, and others, have been working on technology that enables drone swarms to be operated remotely from miles away, drones that can either accompany a ground vehicle [or fly autonomously](https://futurism.com/the-byte/military-swarming-attack-drones-enemy-aircraft), and more.

We've already seen this sort of technology unveiled at different entertainment demonstrations in recent years, such as during the [Super Bowl or during a Disney holiday show](https://gizmodo.com/how-swarms-of-super-intelligent-drones-are-taking-over-1829638441). And these drone swarms aren't only making their way through *the entertainment industry* but there are tremendous applications for this technology in the military space too, and soon the UK military hopes to have their swarm drones [by the end of this year](https://sputniknews.com/military/201902181072516140-drone-swarms-uk-gavin-williamson/).

## Essentially, there are plans to have swarms of small drones [work together to confuse and overwhelm](https://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-drone-swarms-20190219-story.html) antiaircraft defenses.

The UK isn't the only place that's looking to develop their own swarms of drones either, China, and the United States are looking at the same. Eventually, some of these swarms might potentially have [hundreds or thousands of drones working together](https://www.popsci.com/china-drone-swarms).

Considering the enormous *[collateral damage](https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/04/world/middleeast/drone-strike-statistics-answer-few-questions-and-raise-many.html)* that military drones are guilty of inflicting upon the world, we can only hope that the progression toward this capability doesn't mean that there will be even more unjust damage that gets caused.

## The UK government has previously been accused of being [complicit in killing innocent civilians](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/drone-strikes-uk-us-illegal-civilian-deaths-war-crimes-dead-appg-report-a8450206.html) over alleged illegal drone operations.

They've increasingly launched their own strikes and increased military operations overseas, without having to face any public scrutiny for the decision. Most of the public likely isn't aware of the extent to which their own government is inflicting violence upon *mostly innocent parties* overseas. Given their history in this department it doesn't seem wise to rush forward with the plan for swarms of drones, but they're going to press forward regardless of public sentiment on the matter.
