The Workday Is Getting Too Long, Can AI Help?

Something important I would like to share on Hive.

There's just so many workers that are now working at home or in hybrid work arrangements. This new culture has ended up extending their work hours. A new report from Microsoft states that during their workday, the worker starts very early and finishes many hours later. There was some sort of behavioral pattern too. Many workers check email by 6am and are scheduled in meetings after 8pm. This has also resulted in people usually checking emails on weekends.

The report found that workers also receive too much email and get too many messages. On average, each worker gets 117 emails and 153 messages per day. If they have to attend to all of that, it can easily lead to interruptions like every 2 minutes. Most workers also work hours outside of normal working hours, which usually leads to anxiety and burnout. The burnout part has been an issue I had to deal with for a while.

So with the workday getting longer, what can be done to shorten it? I think the objective is to have the work done with speed and as people, we are limited in how fast we can work. The one thing that supercedes us at speed is artificial intelligence.

According to Microsoft, AI tools are the right solutions but we must use them in a manner that does not only make our work faster, they should be tools that help us change the way we work. AI can help us in the many time consuming and boring processes so we can focus on the important things and have rest.

This is a huge warning for all of us. If we don’t change the way we work, we may never stop working. We need smarter tools and a better balance in life.
