How beautiful it is to live new experiences with our children, to feel that they are doing or knowing something for the first time together with us, undoubtedly makes any activity special. We recently went on a family trip that was loaded with many first times and this makes it unforgettable for us, plus as parents we learned new things.

I have been documenting this experience in my blog, but today I would like to talk to you about what this trip meant for our son and how the change of climate and altitude affected him. 


When we travel with children, we have to pack a lot more things, because we have the responsibility to take care of our little ones. We had been planning this trip for a few weeks, and the first thing we did was to buy Angel, my 04 year old, a knitted hat. He was happy with his new hat. I knew it would be very cold, so I also bought him a pair of gloves and packed two thick waterproof jackets that day. I thought that would be enough.

>Qué hermoso es vivir nuevas experiencias con nuestros hijos, sentir que realizan o conocen algo por primera vez junto a nosotros, sin duda, hace que cualquier actividad sea especial. Hace poco realizamos un viaje familiar que estuvo cargado de muchas primeras veces y esto lo hace inolvidable para nosotros, además como padres aprendimos cosas nuevas.

>He estado documentando esta experiencia en mi blog, pero hoy quisiera hablarles acerca de lo que significó, para nuestro hijo, este recorrido y cómo le afectó el cambio de clima y el cambio de altitud.

>Cuando viajamos con niños, debemos empacar muchas cosas más, porque tenemos la responsabilidad de cuidar a nuestros pequeños. Estuvimos planificando este viaje algunas semanas, y lo primero que hicimos fue comprarle a Angel, mi pequeño de 04 años, un gorro tejido. Él estaba feliz con su gorrito nuevo. Sabía que haría mucho frío, así que le compré también un par de guantes y empaqué ese día dos chaquetas impermeables y gruesas. Pensé que con eso sería suficiente..

Another thing that we have to take into account if we are going to be on the road for several hours, especially if we are radically changing the environment to which we are accustomed, is food. Eat breakfast very well, but avoiding heavy meals, we must choose something nutritious and light. Angel did not want to have breakfast at home that day, but I took him a couple of apples, cereal, juice, plus lunch. 

We left home very early and when we arrived at our meeting point, my sister-in-law had a surprise for him, which left him excited for several days. She gave him a dinosaur that he loved. He was on the bus playing with his new friend, until we arrived at our first stop.

>Otra cosa, que tenemos que tener en cuenta, si vamos a estar varias horas en carretera y en especial cambiando radicalmente el entorno ambiental al que estamos acostumbrados, es la alimentación. Desayunar muy bien, pero evitando comidas pesadas, debemos elegir, algo nutritivo y ligero. Angel no quiso desayunar en casa ese día, pero le llevé un par de manzanas, cereal, jugo, además del almuerzo. 

>Salimos muy temprano de casa y al llegar a nuestro punto de encuentro, mi cuñada le tenía una sorpresa, que lo dejó emocionado por varios días. Le regaló un dinosaurio que a él le encantó. Estuvo en el bus jugando con su nuevo amigo, hasta que llegamos a nuestra primera parada.

This stop was the one he enjoyed the most, although he had a little scare when we entered a haunted house, where we had to cross a totally dark corridor, full of things strategically placed to make it look like someone was trying to trap us. Angel felt scared, however, he was very brave, that yes, he squeezed our hands tightly. 



After a good scare, always comes a good taste, and he played in a nice park for a good while.

>Esta parada fue la que más disfrutó, aunque pasó un pequeño susto al entrar a una casa encantada, donde teníamos que cruzar un pasillo totalmente oscuro, lleno de cosas colocadas estratégicamente para que pareciera que alguien nos quería atrapar. Angel sintió miedo, sin embargo, fue muy valiente, eso sí, apretó nuestras manos  con fuerza. 



>Después de un buen susto,  siempre viene un buen gusto, y es que jugó en un bonito parque por un buen rato.

Little by little, we were ascending, but we still had no need to wrap up warm. He had his chance to have breakfast, fill up with energy and did not want to get warm, until we reached the Snow Dog Monument, where a light rain was falling and the change of weather was already noticeable, but it was a climate, very similar to the one we have at our parents' house, so Angel had already felt this level of cold. 


He loved meeting the snowy dog and asked us for a pet dog, but unfortunately we don't have room. Here he was very curious, asked lots of questions and enjoyed the place. When we entered the moor area, he could not get out of the bus without a coat, he was shivering and his breathing was more agitated. It is natural, because children have less capacity to withstand extreme climates.

>Poco a poco, íbamos ascendiendo, pero aún no teníamos necesidad de abrigarnos. Él tuvo su oportunidad de desayunar, llenarse de energía  y no quería abrigarse, hasta llegar al Monumento del Perro Nevado, donde caía una ligera lluvia y ya el cambio de clima se hacía notar, pero era un clima, muy parecido, al que tenemos en casa de nuestros padres, así que Angel ya había sentido este nivel de frío. 


>Le encantó conocer el perro nevado y nos pidió uno de mascota, pero lamentablemente no tenemos espacio. Aquí estuvo muy curioso, hizo muchas preguntas y disfrutó del lugar. Cuando entramos a la zona del páramo, no podía salir del bus sin abrigo, temblaba y su respiración estaba más agitada. Es natural, porque los niños, tienen menor capacidad, para aguantar climas extremos.

Even so, he wanted only one thing: to enjoy some delicious strawberries with creams and, although we wanted to buy them somewhere else, he did not wait, we pleased him and thank goodness, because we did not know what was going to happen later. 

Angel met the Mucubají lagoon for the first time, he enjoyed the ducks, he wanted to see deer, because he saw some posters, but I explained to him that they are in the depth of the mountain, it is difficult, to see them so easily. Here he enjoyed a lot, he ate very well, but he didn't want to walk anymore, he just wanted to be up and hugging us.

>Aun así, quería solo una cosa: disfrutar de unas ricas fresas con cremas y, aunque nosotros queríamos comprarlas en otro sitio, él no esperó, lo complacimos y menos mal fue así, porque no sabíamos lo que más adelante iba a pasar. 

>Angel conoció la laguna Mucubají por primera vez, disfrutó de los patos, quería ver venados, porque vio unos afiches, pero le expliqué que ellos se encuentran en la profundidad de la montaña, es difícil, verlos tan fácilmente. Aquí disfrutó mucho, comió muy bien,  pero ya no quería caminar, solo quería estar alzado y abrazado a nosotros.

We continued traveling and reached an area of the paramo that exceeded 4000 m.a.s.l. Here the climate puts anyone to the test, especially children and people with health problems, as the pressure increases due to the lack of oxygen and it is difficult to breathe, and the cold is more intense. Angel just wanted to go home, he was shivering and not having a good time. 

We returned to the road and arrived at our destination, at 4118 meters above sea level, this stop affected me a little too, but I recovered quickly; however, Angel had to return to the bus with his dad, he just wanted to go back, he was shivering, he looked much whiter and was down, we had to put another hat on him and tuck him in with our coats. The good thing was that he didn't have a headache and he wasn't nauseous either. He didn't want to eat anything, not even candy.

>Seguimos recorriendo y llegamos a una zona del páramo que superaba los 4000 m.s.n.m aquí el clima pone a prueba a cualquiera, en especial a los niños y las personas con problemas de salud, ya que la presión aumenta, por la falta de oxígeno y es difícil respirar, además el frío es más intenso. Angel solo quería volver a casa, temblaba y no la estaba pasando bien. 

>Volvimos a la carretera y llegamos a nuestro destino, a 4118 msnm, esta parada a mí me afecto un poco también, pero me recuperé rápidamente; sin embargo, Angel tuvo que volver al bus con su papá, solo quería regresar, temblaba, se veía mucho más blanco y estaba decaído, tuvimos que colocarle otro gorro y arroparlo con nuestros abrigos. Lo bueno, es que no le dolía la cabeza y tampoco tenía náuseas. No quería comer nada, ni siquiera caramelos.

Just as we prepare our body to ascend, we must prepare ourselves to return to our everyday environment. In a short time, he was back to normal and continued to enjoy the trip. These climate changes can affect us greatly and children are more exposed to suffer from what we commonly call moor sickness or altitude sickness. The symptoms of this can be present even for weeks and it is very annoying. 

Like everything in life, not all people or children have the same experience, many are not affected at all by these changes, while others are, but when it comes to young children we must be very careful because they are not physically prepared for these extreme conditions, we must be aware of how they feel to act in time, keep them hydrated, well fed, with adequate shelter. Try not to let them run or jump, because they get tired easily.

De la misma manera que preparamos nuestro cuerpo para ascender, debemos prepararnos para volver a nuestro ambiente cotidiano. En poco tiempo, él volvió a la normalidad y siguió disfrutando del viaje. Estos cambios de clima pueden afectarnos en gran medida y los niños están más expuestos a sufrir lo que comúnmente llamamos mal de páramo o mal de altura. Los síntomas de esto, pueden estar presentes incluso por semanas y es muy molesto. 

>Como todo en la vida, no todas las personas ni los niños, tienen la misma experiencia, a muchos no les afecta para nada estos cambios, mientras que a otros sí, pero cuando se trata de niños pequeños debemos tener sumo cuidado porque ellos no están preparados físicamente para estas condiciones extremas, debemos estar pendientes de como se sienten para actuar a tiempo, mantenerlos hidratados, bien alimentados, con un abrigo adecuado. Tratar de que no corran o salten, porque se fatigan con facilidad.

Angel really enjoyed the trip in spite of everything and told us that he wants to come back, but next time, he will bring a blanket and be ready for a new adventure.
