<hr>I sat behind Doc Watson's niece during a "singing" on a weekday evening in the summer, when I went to visit Mt. Paran Baptist Church in Deep Gap, North Carolina. She told me all about her uncle and the way things used to be in that valley, and the way they are now.
Most of the service, which was held in the new chapel, across the street from where the original chapel stood when Doc was a boy, was "new" praise music, with a backing karaoke track. Then, two congregants stood up and walked to the piano in the corner. One sang and the other played, "Beautiful Golden Somewhere."
For me this was an incredibly deep experience, as it is one of the a capella Doc sang in a way that really moved me like few of his other records. And here I was in his boyhood church, listening to the grandchildren of the valley sing the same words.
I sang this hymn at my grandmother's funeral as well. I don't know how I held it together, but I did.
Beautiful home, beautiful home,
Oh, how I long to be there.
We shall find peace and rest with the pure and the bless'd
In that beautiful golden somewhere.
