Today marked the 65th anniversary of a massive protest that ended Marcos Pérez Jiménez' dictatorship in Venezuela and the teachers, who have been protesting since the start of the year with demands of fair salaries, decided to use the historical date to call for nationwide demonstrations attended by thousands of people across most major cities in the country. With only a few exceptions, every time a movement for public dissent had been called in the past, it has been met with repression and violence from the regime, but this time the marches reached their intended destinations without incidents. The police and the national guard were deployed in the streets but they were mostly relaxed, mingling with the crowd and talking. By the time I got to the spot where the main barricade had been placed, the march in Caracas had dissolved peacefully and traffic was already returning. Children who had been let out early from school were running around and playing. This might sound dull, but I find it beautiful and heartening.

Venezuelans have been through a long process of clashing against the government with the intent of forcing them out of power and demanding that civil rights enshrined in the Constitution be respected. Hundreds have died during street demonstrations since then and in our darkest times, thousands were arrested and sent to common jails to be subjected to all forms of humiliation and abuse. Meanwhile, those in power seemed unassailable and people's faith dwindled as alleged opposition leaders spoke of rising against tyranny, their voices slowly but surely stifled by backdoor deals and persecution. Now for the first time during that process, the protests aren't being led by any politicians and the tyrants may remain in the seats of rule but their response can no longer be violent, not only because they don't have the resources now for a protracted street fight, but also because they're dispersed, broken down into turfs with their own interests and liaisons. They can't cooperate or command any force to engage in repression like they used to.

This speaks of a profound change of vibration in my country, a different set of rules has been laid out and the context seems auspicious to push for more changes, up to and including new elections and the end of the chavista government. I don't know what that will take or if there's still any risk that the divided regime will find its bearings again and retaliate to any public attempts at unseating them, but what I saw today in streets caressed by strong fresh winds under a beautifully bright sky was just people getting along regardless of their uniform, and that's a wonderful sign of healing, of recovery. I plan to continue attending the coming demonstrations, to document them and also do my service among the people, I've been waiting for this possibility for a long time and now that it's here, I want to make the most of it.

As the world moves through the collapse of societal and economic structures, more expressions of dissent and anger will continue to appear everywhere. It might be that the nations of those reading this post are already facing situations of increasing social conflict. Know that Venezuelans understand your position, and that we've risen above our difficulties and disagreements to start building a new country for ourselves. If we can do it after going through one of the worst socio-political and economic crises in recent history, so can everyone else. No challenge is too big that it can't be overcome through sustained, patient and focused action!

Self-moderation and patience overcome any obstacles, control your reactions especially when provoked, question your impulses, take your time to do your work well. It is wise to lower your defenses and expose yourself, the world is honest to the unclouded eye. Surrender and let the tide guide you to your goals.
