*'A building is a symbol, as is the act of destroying it. Symbols are given power by people. A symbol, in and of itself is powerless, but with enough people behind it, blowing up a building can change the world.’*

And the same could be said of the V for Vendetta mask, in some circles it has become more than just a mask, but a symbol, or as V himself said, his mask is ‘no mere veneer of vanity’ but is ‘held as a votive’, symbolising the desires or wishes of the ‘vox populi’.

**GUY FAWKES**

The V for Vendetta mask is based upon the appearance of ‘Guy Fawkes’ a Roman Catholic 'restorationist' who in 1605, England, planned to displace protestant rule by blowing up the Houses of Parliament. He failed, but his actions are still remembered today, and became known as the ‘gunpowder plot’.

*‘Remember remember the fifth of November, the gunpowder, treason and plot, I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason, should ever be forgot.’*

It was the 5th of November 1605 that Guy Fawkes was caught within the cellars of the Houses of Parliament armed with dozens of barrels of gunpowder. The plot was actually led by ‘Robert Catesby’ a member of a prominent Roman Catholic family with an illustrious lineage, who in 1601 had been fined for his part in a plot to remove Queen Elizabeth the 1st from power, but it was Guy Fawkes who was placed in charge of carrying out the gunpowder plot.

Found guilty of plotting against the government and with his co-conspirators charged with treason, Guy Fawkes was hung, drawn and quartered, a punishment reserved for the most serious of crimes that involved being dragged on a hurdle (or wooden frame) to the place of execution, hung by the neck for a short time or until almost dead, being disembowelled and emasculated and the genitalia and entrails burned before the condemned, and finally the body was beheaded, and divided into four parts.

**Viva la Revolution!**

Within V for Vendetta it was 400 years later that ‘V’ a masked revolutionary and anarchist donned the Guy Fawkes mask, took up the story and set about plotting an elaborate and theatrical campaign of his own to bring down the government. Urging the masses via live television broadcast to take control of their own lives and ‘stand beside’ him, and join him in revolution.

**Anonymous and the V for Vendetta mask**

The V for Vendetta Guy Fawkes mask has been adopted as a symbol and uniform by ‘Anonymous’ a leaderless internet based group that represents the actions of numerous online communities acting collectively to bring about the completion of an agreed upon goal.

‘Anonymous’ is the name given to the shared identity of the many, and its members are known to be associated with numerous online websites and communities, including ‘4chan’ and ‘Futaba’, from where their actions are co-ordinated.

This anonymous collective of so called ‘domestic terrorists’ are said to have been responsible for all manner of anarchistic attacks, including the ‘YouTube Porn Day’ upon which anonymous members flooded YouTube with adult movies disguised as family favorites. Anonymous members later claimed that this attack was in response to YouTube’s decision to remove all music videos from its site, over copyright concerns.

'Anonymous' gained worldwide notoriety following ‘Project Chanology’ a highly organized protest against the Church of Scientology during which members wore V for Vendetta masks.
