Routed router

Since a few weeks ago my sister has been complaining about the unstable connection with the Internet router at home; devices kept getting dropped randomly and they frequently had to reboot the router to get it to connect again.

The router that came with our UNIFI package is this model, a D-link wireless L7-N-R2000. Image credit : carousell.com

Since I had a brand new spare router sitting in storage, I figured that instead of contacting our service provider , TM UNIFI, I will just swap with the new one myself. I mean, how hard could it be?

Of course, I have underestimated the task. Apparently you cannot simply swap a third part router to be used with the UNIFI service, it has to be able to support VLAN tagging, something that is beyond my 15 years old IT degree (99% of which I have returned to the lecturer, figuratively speaking).

But this was just one of the unfortunate mistakes I made, the whole fiasco in chronological order is as follows:

On Thursday night, after installing the new router, I realized I forgot the UNIFI password. I rang up customer service and requested that they reset it and send me the new password, which they did about 16 hours later.

On friday noon, after getting the new password, only then I realize the new router would not work without VLAN tagging. So I decided to re-install the old router to at least get some internet connection going while I figure out another solution.

Upon re-installing the old router, I need to enter the control panel to key-in the new UNIFI password.

I discovered that at some point in the past I changed the router control panel password, which I no longer remember. In order to login with the default password, I had to re-set the router to the factory settings.

After re-setting the router, the wireless fails to activate. I re-set it again a few more times, no luck.

At this point the the frustra-to-meter has red-lined. I threw in the towel and called TM customer service - They promised to send someone over to look at it.

Today, Saturday, the technicians dropped by, took a look at the old router, and agreed that they will provide a brand new router under warranty. So they proceeded to install the new router, set it up and voila! my household has returned from the stone age, all done completely free of charge by our service provider.

New dual channel router provided by TM, a TP-link AC1200.

To wit, all I had to do in the first place, was to give TM customer service a call and wait a day.

Lesson here - do your research before dismantling stuffs. When in doubt, call in the experts and save yourself the heartache!
