The comet was first discovered by Lewis Swift on July 16, 1862, and later by Horace Parnell Tuttle on July 19, 1862. The comet was last seen from Earth using binoculars in 1992, and it will again be visible from earth on August 5, 2126, and then on August 24, 2261. The comet's perihelion (closest to the sun) is just under that of Earth, while its aphelion (furthest from the sun) is just over that of Pluto.</p> <p>The Perseid meteor shower which happens every year in July-August (last occurred July 17-August 24, 2018) is one of the best-known showers, is said to occur due to Comet Swift-Tuttle.</p> <p>The orbit of the comet is very stable and there is no threat to Earth for the next 2000 years. The comet will pass 22,900,000 km from Earth in 2126 and within 22,000,000 km from Earth in 2261. The comet will be closest to Earth in 3044 when it will pass at 1,600,000 km from Earth. Again, the comet will come closest to Earth in the year 4479, when it will pass less than 7,470,000 km from Earth with an impact probability of 1 in a million. Following year 4479, the orbit of the comet is more difficult to predict. Comet Swift-Tuttle is the largest Solar System object that comes closest to Earth. Hence, it is the most dangerous object known to humanity.
