A couple weeks ago I needed to get some materials together for a little DIY project for the house. My housemate has been talking about a coffee sign above the coffee station for months, even before I got here and we've thrown some ideas around but nothing concrete ever really came of it. Until now.

You can see an offcut I had of French Sycamore that I decided would work well for this. It has a lovely live edge on both top and bottom and some beautiful grain showing through the light coloured wood. It was rough planed and had got rather dirty so it needed to be cut to size and sanded down before I could do anything with it. Once sanded, it looked amazing and felt silky smooth to the touch.

The kitchen was retiled recently in glossy black and there are finishes of wood everywhere. He and I both really like wooden things and I'm rather envious of some of the gorgeous cutting boards he bought years ago, they are hefty and solid with lovely grain showing through.

He also put up a shelving unit for the coffee to go on and we decided that's where the sign should hang from. We settled on something that says

"But First... Coffee"

I messed around with some designs but I didn't really like any of them until I started thinking out of the box. He's a Starwars fan and loves Bobba Fett and the Mandalorian so that's where it went. Did you know you can download Mandalorian Type Font? How freaking cool is that?!

Once the sanding was complete, I had to mark two holes to drill that I could fit a small chain through so it could hang. I fucked up so badly on this but it made me laugh so I might as well share it. I took out my 5mm wood bit to make a pilot hole and *chucked* it in. See what I did there? Anyway. I made sure to align the drill bit with the middle of the hole and started drilling but very little happened. It wasn't on hammer or anything but I couldn't understand why it wasn't working as expected. I replaced the bit thinking maybe that one was dull, but the same thing happened. Then I realised that I had my drill in reverse ๐Ÿคฃ I'm such a tool sometimes. I moved on after having a good laugh at myself and upsized the bit making the holes a bit larger.

Once that was done, I applied the vinyl that my friend Zainy had made for me from the design I had made and Voila. I trimmed it to align with the top and the bottom contours and this was the end result.

It's not entirely complete yet. I still have to find the right chain for it and tidy up the hole on the right where the bit bit a bit too much (lol), but hey, I'm human and these things happen. Either way, I reckon it's going to look pretty darn cool.
