When Everyday Actions Turn Deadly Leading to Unfortunate Medical Emergencies
<div class="text-justify">

It is not everyday that we experience some normal activity gone wrong in our lives but this doesn't mean it doesn't happen, and it becomes worse when it has to do with our health. So in this post, I will be looking at a few medical emergency scenarios that has occurred in the lives of a few people, and what e think.

First, I will be writing about the story of a Chinese man who drank a 1.5 liter of coca-cola in 10 minutes to quench his thirst, and this led to his death. A lot of us drink Coca-cola or some type of soda beverage, and for some people, they cannot do without it daily. So we can say that this doesn't happen regularly, since not all of us drink Coca-Cola, and find ourselves at the hospital bed.[](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-10012313/Man-died-downing-1-5-litre-bottle-Coca-Cola-10-minutes-doctors-claim.html)

The nutrients from our food or drinks go to the Liver through the Hepatic Portal Veins where these nutrients are sent to the areas that they are needed. When the man drank the Soda, there was an unexpected gas buildup in his intestines. When he finished consuming the drink, he felt a swelling an intense pain in his upper abdomen and this took him to Beijing’s Chaoyang Hospital.

The CT scan requested for in the hospital showed that there was gas buildup in the intestines of the person, an the gas had leaked to his hepatic portal veins which caused his liver to be deprived of oxygen, leading to its damage. The patient actually died after 18 hours in the hospital but then you will ask if soda could actually be the cause of death?

Well, a Biochemist professor named as Nathan Davies says that "the chances of downing 1.5 liters of a regular soft drink being fatal would be very staggeringly unlikely, and usually, this type of condition is caused because you have bacteria that has made its way from the normal gastrointestinal tract to somewhere they are not suppose to be such as in the lining of the small intestine, in this case." It is no doubt that the soda alone cannot be the cause of this death and there are other factors that would've contributed to his death.[](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/digestive-diseases/gas-digestive-tract/symptoms-causes), [](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4209534/) [](https://www.latintimes.com/man-dies-after-chugging-coca-cola-during-heatwave-487643)

Another medical case I will be discussing was as a result of eating undercooked food. This is the story of a young lady who had fresh Tilapia for dinner and that changed her live forever. From eating what she would have termed to be ordinary tilapia, a series of event broke out. She became unwell 24hours after ingesting the fish, and in no time found herself in the hospital where she was put under induce coma. Her fingers, feet, and lips began to turn black. Her kidneys were shutting down as she was in full-blown sepsis.[](https://www.financialexpress.com/healthcare/news-healthcare/woman-loses-all-four-limbs-after-eating-undercooked-contaminated-fish-read-on-to-know-more/3246961/) [](https://nypost.com/2023/09/16/california-woman-has-all-four-limbs-amputated-after-fighting-bacterial-infection-from-eating-talapia/)

To save the patient's live, the doctors had to make a decision to amputate her four limbs to prevent the infection from spreading to other part of the body. I am sure you are waiting for a diagnosis, well the diagnosis was said that the infection was caused by Vibrio vulnificus known as flesh eating bacteria, and this was in the fish as vibrio thrives in seawater so they spread to sea animals which can infect us if not properly cooked or uncooked when eaten.[](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK554404/) [](https://www.cdc.gov/vibrio/wounds.html)

When people get the bacteria, they can suffer from Necrotizing fasciitis which causes the flesh around the infected site to die causing necrosis. This can lead to organ failures or death, and the best option is to cut out the infected region.[](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK430756/) [](https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/2051157-overview?form=fpf)

The next case I will be discussing is the case of how good habits can be life-threatening with a single mistake. This is a story of a student who was eating spaghetti but then began to feel nausea, abdominal pain, and started to vomit profusely for hours. He also had watery diarrhea but since he didn't think of it as a medical emergency, he went to sleep hoping to have a better day the next, only not to wake up again. [](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3232990/)

Autopsy says that Bacillus Cereus was present in the reheated spaghetti and this can lead to liver necrosis and shutting down. The spaghetti was prepared 5 days before he ate it and it was left on the cabinet for that long in room temperature instead of being refrigerated.[](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK459121/) [](http://www.bccdc.ca/health-info/diseases-conditions/bacillus-cereus)

Life's unpredictability is starkly evident in these medical emergency tales, reminding us to cherish our health and make informed choices. Whether it's our beverage preferences, culinary practices, or daily habits, a momentary lapse can lead to dire consequences.
