<p>Paul Pimsleur, author of a series of foreign-language courses, recommends studying a foreign language for only 30 minutes a day. If you study longer, you should review the day's lesson rather than starting another lesson.</p>
<p>You can do a task for a given amount of time, then relax or do something else, and continue again. Or, you can return to the task the next day.</p>
<p>Consider:</p>
<p>1) If you do something for short periods of time everyday, it will gradually become a habit. Changing habits is what you want to accomplish, isn't it?</p>
<p>2) Burnout is often caused by doing a task for too long. Compulsive behavior leads to burnout, and burnout prevents habit formation. Fight compulsive behavior with a timer.</p>

<p>An easier way to do laundry, if you have your own washer and dryer, is to wash one load of clothes each evening. When you arrive home from work, move the clothes from the washer to the dryer, and start another load in the washer. An hour later, put away the clothes in the dryer. Stop until tomorrow. No more full days of laundry! (Note: Please use common sense. For example, don't leave wet clothes in the washer overnight if the washer is in the garage, and the temperature is below freezing.)</p>

<p>Fortunately, life offers many brief periods of time: While you wait for a bus or train, while you're on hold on the phone, in the waiting room at the doctor's office, etc. Bring along articles to read or other small tasks. It beats staring at the wall, and gives you time later for other projects.</p>
