Miss Steph Zombie - Studio Editing ( before and after included )

Hi gang, summer is finally here !

Its nice and sunny outside yet I'm sitting inside editing images, but its an absolute joy. I shot Steph ( @siren who is also on this platform ) a while ago back however I only got around to editing them now. It was a spontaneous shoot and we tried a couple of different looks.

I'm not a fan of shooting in a studio or using flash as I'm not very confident with the technicalities. My main strengths in this field would be natural light. I ended up going through a few videos on YouTube on how to create high quality , editorial style editing and came up with this image:

Click image to view full size

I usually don't spend a long time on editing images however for studio shots it must be done as the skin texture can be seen. The original image had a black background which was a bed sheet that @condra brought, it's actually textured however I had to put the color down to make it easier for editing.

I wasn't happy with the black background as I felt it was too dull so I was looking up on how to replace the background to a color of choice.

You can see the before photo below on the left and the new background on the right

https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeYxEUBkw9gezdorJEmb9LTWnv2MksArgYVp3xHcM1Qbp/image.png

https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmd9LkvcEBzmuWHFtuUmUUKoJFNthpvNJT8LZzJWKxqr8a/image.png

I changed the colors slightly to appear more vibrant and the skin to be brighter. The background was done by using the selection tool and refining the edges. The video reference to which I did this technique is referenced below.

This is the original image without any editing applied to it. You can see there are a few messy hairs and in general the photo just doesn't look interesting.

I didn't edit much of the colors as I was happy with the tones. The next step was to make the background look more natural and editing the skin. For the background I added in a darker vignette effect using the hue/saturation adjustment and an eclipse selection which I then blurred. For the skin, I used gradient maps for adding a nicer tone and a separate blemish layer which was easy to work with as if there was something I wasn't happy about, it was easy to change.

I finalized the editing here and you can see the layers that I have. For the skin I also used dodge + burn and frequency separation as well as sculpting. Lastly I added a sharpening adjustment.

As you can image...

It took a while to edit this due to me constantly referencing the videos however I am happy with the overall result. I would of course like to get more experience in editing the skin and keeping the textures natural and sharp. There is still much to learn.

Of course I had my dear pal @condra who is an inspiration and a mentor to me on the actual day of the shooting. He helped me set up lights and my camera settings which made the images easier to edit because I just had to focus on the skin and background.
