DAMN I wanted to like this.
This felt... so pointless. The writing is so pleasant and I really enjoyed the pacing of the initial chapters: how Stoner fell in love with academia, how conflicted he felt leaving behind his struggling ma and pa, their eventual demise, how his jumping into a young marriage led him and Edith into a loveless relationship. But then... nothing came out of it. Stoner lived through TWO WORLD WARS, yet we got nothing of substance out of this impressive feat. Stoner's wife was severely ill and unwell, yet we got to know nothing about her actual relationship with her father, nor her reason for her changes and hysterics. Stoner's lover was an academic woman in a World that was unforgiving and cruel and misogynistic, yet all I knew about her was that she wrote books, smoke and had "violet eyes".

Lomax and his disability had grounds for so much more when it came to their relationship, and I enjoyed the chapters in which Stoner sat true to his feelings and faced him. However, we got nothing of substance from their interaction and rivalry. I wanted more from everything in this novel.

Stoner bored me, and that's a sin in my books. 2 stars for the writing alone and for what could have been.
