We usually see the 007 series and other movies where agents were showing off their skills, so we wanted to see who is a better agent between the two of us. So, we would do something differently and erase our steps so that it would not be traceable. We would not want it to be traced back to any of us. It was a good game and fun too. Sometimes we would walk and try not to make a sound when coming so no one would know we were coming. The essence is just so we won't leave a trace. Not leaving a trace is the first thing in the mind of someone who commits a crime, he erases all trace of what he has done, leaving no witnesses. Not a trace left to find.
