Sometimes, trips aren’t about sightseeing or leisure—they’re about responsibility. This recent visit to my hometown in Bicol wasn’t for a vacation. My days were packed, my time was tight, and there was no room for detours. But in between the tasks and commitments, I still found small ways to bring home pieces of the place I love—through its flavors, textures, and handmade treasures. Handmade Touch from Bicol: Abaca Slippers & Native Bayong A simple but timeless Bicol staple — handwoven abaca slippers and a native bayong (woven tote bag) made from dried palm leaves. These are everyday essentials back home, durable enough for years of use yet carrying the charm of traditional craftsmanship. Native Wallets & Fan Small yet useful keepsakes — woven wallets and a hand fan — perfect examples of how practicality meets beauty in Bicol’s handicrafts. Each weave tells a story of skilled local hands keeping traditions alive. Little Treats, Lasting Memories: Pili Nut Goodies And of course, no trip to Bicol feels complete without pili nut treats. Rich, and uniquely ours — each bite carries the taste of home. They’re perfect as pasalubong, but truthfully, it’s hard not to keep a pack for yourself. Sangkaka Among the many treasures I brought home from Bicol, one holds a special place in my heart — sangkaka. Neatly wrapped in banana leaves, this golden-brown disc of unrefined sugar feels like a piece of the past preserved in my hands. Made by patiently boiling fresh sugarcane juice until it thickens and sets, sangkaka carries the deep aroma of molasses and the earthy sweetness of the land. In our kitchen, it’s more than just a sweetener — it’s a reminder of home, of simpler days, and of the hands that keep these traditions alive. Ampaw Light, crispy, and just the right sweetness — ampaw is one of those snacks that can easily disappear in one sitting. Made from puffed rice coated in caramelized syrup, it’s simple but always satisfying. A bite feels like a return to childhood afternoons, munching away without a care in the world. Bukayo A sweet treat made from grated coconut simmered in caramelized sugar. Chewy, rich, and full of that classic coconut goodness, it’s a simple dessert that never fails to bring a taste of home. Tsokolate Balls These rich, dark cacao balls are pure comfort in solid form. Made from roasted cacao beans and a touch of sugar, they’re meant to be melted into hot water or milk to make traditional Filipino tsokolate — thick, warm, and deeply chocolatey. The kind of drink that warms you twice: first with its heat, then with its memories. Puto Seko A crumbly, melt-in-the-mouth cookie made from rice flour, sugar, and eggs. It’s light, subtly sweet, and has that powdery texture that makes you reach for “just one more” until you realize the pack is almost gone. Whether it’s from Camarines Sur or Albay, this classic Filipino treat is a staple pasalubong that never goes out of style. Toasted Rice Puto Unlike the softer puto we usually know, this version is firm, and has a gentle toasted flavor from being baked or cooked on a pan. It has a delicate crispness on the outside, yet stays soft in the middle. Each piece feels like a bridge between the familiar puto and the crunch of native biscuits. Pili Yema . Imagine a soft, rich yema candy, but with a surprise in the center—a whole pili nut that gives every bite a nutty depth and a satisfying chew. It’s a treat that’s both creamy and distinctly Bicolano, best enjoyed slowly so the flavors linger. Peanut Brittle Golden, glossy, and full of crushed peanuts, this treat is the kind you can’t help but nibble piece by piece. It’s sweet and crisp, with that roasted peanut aroma that makes each bite a little nostalgic. Perfect for sharing—or for secretly keeping in your snack stash. Pili Hopia This is hopia with a Bicolano heart. Flaky on the outside, with a mildly sweet pili filling tucked inside, it’s a simple but flavorful twist to the classic hopia. Pili Tart A crisp, crumbly pastry shell filled with sweet, caramel-like goodness, topped with a smooth pili nut. The texture contrast is everything: delicate crust, rich filling, and a nutty bite. It’s the kind of snack that feels both comforting and elegant, whether you pair it with coffee or just enjoy it as is. Final Thoughts This trip was short and filled with responsibilities, but I’m glad I still managed to bring home a taste—and a touch—of Bicol. Every sweet and snack I picked carries a little story, and each woven piece holds the warmth of the hands that made it. These simple pasalubong remind me of the home I return to and the traditions I hold dear. Even when life is busy, they keep me connected—and they’re always worth sharing. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. It means a lot to me.
