With Bitcoin popularity soaring like never before, Microsoft plans to add support for the cryptocurrency in Excel for both mobile and desktop versions. According to the official Office 365 roadmap, updated in December, Microsoft engineers are currently working on adding Bitcoin as one of the currency formats supported in Excel installations. The feature is expected to roll out somewhere in 2017, with no exact timeline available. In a separate LinkedIn post, Martin Butler, Account Executive, Globals at Microsoft, has confirmed the company's plans. "In 2017, Excel will be able to recognize, format, calculate, and analyze numbers expressed in Bitcoin currency," Butler said. "The new feature will be available for Excel running under Windows 10, Android, Mac OS, and iOS, and will include Excel Mobile versions as well." Bitcoin support coming to Excel Online too The feature will be rolled out with Excel 2016. Excel Online, the web-based version of Excel will also receive the update. Microsoft also plans to release major new features every month of 2017. Other updates currently in the works include the capability of adding maps in Excel spreadsheets, support for 3D models, personalized pivot table layouts, a built-in digital ruler, easier background removal during photo editing, and improvements for Surface Pen interactions.
