## Roter Apollofalter ■ Mountain Apollo 🦋
_Parnassius apollo (Linnaeus, 1758)_

Wer Schmetterlinge liebt, muss diesem Falter einmal im Leben begegnet sein. Er ist einer von vier in Deutschland offiziell gelisteten Ritterfalter (Papilionidae). Kaum ein anderer Tagfalter übt so eine magische Anziehungskraft aus, wie der Apollo Falter. Sein Flug gleicht einem Tanz in der Luft. Seine Flügel wirken wie Pergamentpapier und die roten Punkte auf den Hinterflügeln leuchten in der Sonne.

_Who loves butterflies must have met this butterfly once in his life. It is one of four Papilionidae officially listed in Germany. Hardly any other butterfly exerts such a magical attraction as the Apollo butterfly. Its flight resembles a dance in the air. Its wings look like parchment paper and the red dots on the back wings glow in the sun._

Die Reise zu den Apollos beginnt bei mir in der Nacht. Morgens um 2:00 Uhr beginnt die Reise mit einer 2 stündigen Autofahrt. Ich will vor Sonnenaufgang die steilen Hänge der Wacholderheide erreicht haben. Ziel ist es einen Apollo an seinem Ansitz zu finden bevor die Sonne aufgeht. So kann ich auf das beste Licht warten. Trifft die Sonne auf den Falter, öffnet er die Flügel, um möglichst viel Wärme zu tanken. Das ist der beste Moment, um die Flügeloberseite optimal zu fotografieren. Hat der Falter genügend Sonne getankt, startet er zu seinem ersten Flug in den Tag. 
Meistens sitze ich noch einige Zeit an den Steilhängen um den Flug der Apollos zu verfolgen. Ein traumhafter Abblick, wenn der Gaukler der Lüfte von Blüte zu Blüte tanzt.

_The journey to the Apollos begins with me in the night. In the morning at 2:00 o'clock the journey begins with a 2 hour drive. I want to have reached before sunrise the steep slopes of the juniper heath.  The goal is to find an Apollo at his hide before the sun rises. So I can wait for the best light. When the sun hits the butterfly, it opens its wings to get as much warmth as possible. This is the best moment to photograph the top of the wings. If the butterfly has enough sun, it takes off for its first flight into the day. 
Most of the time I still sit on the steep slopes for some time to follow the flight of the Apollos. A dreamlike view when the juggler of the air dances from flower to flower._

In Deutschland legt das Weibchen seine Eier ausschließlich an die weiße Fetthenne (Sedum album). Die Raupe entwickelt sich im Ei und überwintert. Im Frühling schlüpft die Raupe und ernährt sich von der Fetthenne. Sie lebt meist gut getarnt in der Vegetation bis zu ihrer Verpuppung. Der Falter schlüpft Ende Juni. Die Weibchen fliegen nicht weit und halten sich meistens in der Nähe der Futterpflanze auf. Der Apollo kann sich so schlecht ausbreiten und ist an sein Habitat gebunden. Dies erklärt, warum es so wichtig, ist die letzten verbliebenen Habitate zu erhalten und unter Schutz zu stellen.

_In Germany the female lays her eggs exclusively on the white stonecrop (Sedum album). The caterpillar develops in the egg and hibernates. In spring the caterpillar hatches and feeds on the stonecrop. It usually lives well camouflaged in the vegetation until it pupates. The butterfly hatches at the end of June. The females do not fly far and usually stay close to the food plant. The Apollo can spread so badly and is bound to its habitat. This explains why it is so important to preserve and protect the last remaining habitats._

Dieser Tagfalter ist der einzige nicht tropischer Schmetterling, der nach dem Washingtoner Artenschutzabkommen, Appendix II weltweit streng geschützt ist.

_This butterfly is the only non-tropical butterfly to be strictly protected worldwide under the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, Appendix II._
