The trouble with social media - a rant from a photographer on Hive
I am a lightpainting photographer and create images mostly in the dark. I spend ages honing the final image and aim to make the photograph in one single continuous photographic exposure. It's what "real" lightpainters do.

I've developed my skills over the years and lately I've become a bit disillusioned with social media. I post an image which may have taken me hours to get right and it dive bombs on social media! At the same time I see so called lightpainters who have taken a photo of some really terrible lightpainting or even spun a terrible steel wool ball around and the response they get is phenomenal! Thousands of likes, views and kudos for posting crap. In fact, on one occasion, I spotted an article on the BBC News website with an "artist" showcasing his work and it was really was terrible work.

This might go some way to explaining why I haven't bothered so much with Instascram, Zuckerbook and even Flickr. Hive seems to be the logical choice to post my efforts even if it doesn't get understood by the majority at least it gets appreciated by my peers in the Lightpainters United Community here on the Hive.

So this is a post of images which I consider myself to be absolute f'in masterpieces but which haven't been appreciated on social media:

***Desne in the dark***

Shot with my slightly mad friend Desne, this is her waving a light blade in the dark. I was really pleased with this shot and on posting it to social media, I was expecting it to do rather well. No it didn't, it dive bombed!

***Gina and the Quadrablaster***

I absolutely loved this shot of Gina in an abandoned colliery. I was using a home made gadget which fitted to a rear mounted flashgun which split the light in to four quadrants, each with a different colour gel.

Massively under-appreciated on social media!

***Live long and prosper***

My homage to Star Trek with my own hand as the model. This is a two tripod and two lens swap image shot in one photographic exposure. It dive bombed but I love it!

***Jalfrezi Nights***

From an evening out in the dark with German and Geordie lightpainters which also involved a visit to a curry house!

Maybe it's because it was a memorable evening that I liked this image. I remember being really proud of this one only to find that on social media, it dive bombed again!

***Convex Nights***

Another dive bomb! This image involved lens and tripod swaps with plenty of forward planning and collaboration from my peers. But despite nailing this highly technical image, it's another which dived lower!

***Virus X***

I went through a phase of lightpainting stood in my kitchen in the dark with a circuit board and an image of a skull on my iPad. These are so much fun to make and the creative juices flow with Eureka! moments all over the place!

***Behind the scenes***

Sometimes a behind the scenes shot works better that the actual image you were aiming for. This shot took ages to set up the lighting at the rear of the frame, carefully positioning the lights out of view from the camera.

Another image under-appreciated on social media!

***Liv waves my light sabre***

In writing this post, I've come to the conclusion that just because I like an image, it doesn't mean that everyone else will. I like it and that's what counts!

***About me:***
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.

**WHAT IS LIGHTPAINTING?**

Lightpainting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or to shine a point of light directly at the camera, or by moving the camera itself during exposure. Nothing is added or removed in post processing.
