to bot or not...?
## bot
_bot_ is short for robot.
_robot_ derives from Czech language; robota means 'work'.
(Rabota meaning work/labor in most (all?) slavic languages btw)
A robot is a machine that does work.

# @wang
Most readers have probably never heard of @wang.
In Hive's (Steem back then) early days, it was the first bot users encountered.
Whenever someone made their first post using #introduceyourself as tag, @wang would automatically comment and also vote for the post.
Things worked differently then, and voting a post before all others could generate __huge__ curation rewards.
That way, @wang made 1 mio Steempower.
@wang deserves their own post, but for now:
@wang got downvoted heavily and was also one of the first accounts to get completely nuked and ended up with a negative reputation.

**Since @wang, there was a silent agreement not to spam automated comments.**

# @hivebuzz
@arcange never cared and created @steemitboard, which is now called @hivebuzz.
@hivebuzz just spams all sorts of comments all the time.
To me this is just **spam** with a slightly more sophisticated method than @wang.
I had to tell @arcange's bot about 4x times to ``stop!!!`` until it now finally leaves me alone.

Personally, I think rules should apply to everyone, but apparently you just have to be blunt about it and then you can get away with it on Hive.
**I think it's unfair.**
Nonetheless, I see how well it all worked out for @arcange (and others - just taking him as the most prominent example) and since rules only apply to weak accounts, I am thinking about botting my own stuff here

# governance expiration notification
Soon a lot of governance votes will expire.
It is quite easy for me to create a bot that notifies everyone, whos governance votes are about to expire and spam them with a message like:
```
Hello! Your governance votes will expire on xx/xx/2022 at xx/xx.
Just cast a new governance vote to prevent this!
While you are at it, please consider voting for @felixxx witness.
Much peace and harmony, I love you ❤️
@felixxx
Peace
```
But, I have principles and it feels kind of stupid.
**I am sure it would work well, though.**

# Value
The above described service would actually be valuable for some people.
Just the other day I informed a friend about how his votes would expire soon and he actually wasn't aware at all.
I have created comment and posting bots before.
The most infamous example was, when I created a bot, which would inform people about how often they had used #introduceyourself. Some had used it 100 times.
To me, using that tag more than once only blocks it for actually new people here.
I consider it reward farming and again: rules should apply to everyone.
...
You wouldn't believe how much hate I got for it.
I was even personally confronted about it at Steemfest.
So I decided policing content like that wasn't worth it for me.

Today, I think a bot like that would be worth the effort and it would probably help my witness campaign a lot. Even better: I could automate a post every week to #tag and mention these people. Farming rewards like @quochuy.

Should I stick to my principles or should I just start botting?

# Should I bot or should I not?

Let me know in the comments, what you think of it.
