Nearly lost most of my pictures due to my own stupidity, and how I saved them.
##
Yesterday was a pain in the ass!

### I have an old 2.5 inch 750gb hard drive from an old laptop that I have in an external case. I use the drive for transfers and minimal storage. The transfer was my intention this time but apparently the drive ended up going bad. I had put 300gb of various images and videos on the drive and was going to put them on our server backup drives. During the transfer process I noticed the drive was not sounding the best, sounded like the armature was knocking against the case. Well, the drive comes up now as corrupted and unreadable by Windows.

### My father has done extensive work on many people's older computers over the years and learned of and used all the various computer forensics software to retrieve data. His experience has given me a better ability to fix my own screw ups or hardware malfunctions. Having had to do this process a couple of times now, I am fairly comfortable with it, the only major concern is if the drive is just too broke for the tools I have.

### I did a bit of searching and checking for newer software that would accomplish what I needed in retrieving the data. I came up with the TestDisk and PhotoRec package created by [CGSECURITY](http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download). It is a nice and simple program that works like a charm. The best part of the PhotoRec program is that you can choose the type of photos you want to recover. For instance my first scan and recovery was of my most important (2k+) Nikon .nef files which fall under the .tiff category. Currently I am working on pulling all the thousands of .jpg images off the drive in a second scan and recovery.

### The process is not fast by any means, but it works and that is better than loosing the data permanently. There are other programs that I found to do the same type of recovery work but PhotoRec is the easiest and simplest in my experience. It also picked up more files than the other programs. The only thing about the program is that is does not maintain the file directory tree so all the images get dumped to 500 item sized folders in the specified directory.

### In the end, the most important thing to remember is:

# ****EDIT****
### Here is the final recovery number for the .jpgs on the drive. It made 68 directories each with 500 to 600 images.
