The church was originally built by the members of the Silk Art Corporation in 1591. Saint Philip and Saint James are indeed the saints protectors of those who work with silk and, more in general, they are saints defending against skin diseases.

While its origins are fully Renascent, today the church is completely Baroque; this is because throughout the XVII century, the church was almost completely restored and restyled according to the Rococò style of Naples, typycal artistic movement of the '30s, '40s, and '50s of the 1700th century.

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23wgBNzSqoq8RJikMUSKMy55og35ng2JHJ4qKoEBi2AgteFoaMvFTMzPy3KFm2CChCNvP.jpg

In the church it's possible to see, if you take the guided tour, the beautiful garments and clothing crafted in silk by the artisans of the silk corporation for the most important men in power in that period. Those clothes are so rich and beautiful, well conserved by the art association which organizes the tours and keeps care of the entire artistic value of this church and of Santa Luciella as well./div>
https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23tvZhmLaGxCbgmRJVkvemFRmCNwF2iiCAyB77NvpCD7aL5L9BqYMUbtTqbgrBmoVzBBW.jpg

Santa Luciella ai Librai

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23xKxvfd2HjcXKU9V17sENouUGuUq2hqgmH6V9wWtnrBcnPau5HosTzv1gf2VeJTB93EV.jpg

Santa Luciella ai Librai has a very different story and origin compared to Santi Filippo e Giacomo. This church was pre-existent before it actually became a church, meaning it was a private building later donated by the owners to the art corporation of the artisans "pipernieri", a group of workers specialized with the "piperno" rock, a local kind of rock very hard and greatly used for buildings in the area of Naples and the region of Campania. Because this corporation was composed by poor workers and their family, they couldn't afford to build from scratch a new and great church as the silk art corporation did. So they accepted the donation of a small and poor single-room building which they then transformed into their corporation's protector saint, Saint Lucia, in napolteano "Santa Luciella", protector of the sight and defending from the eyes' diseases. From this image you can indeed see Santa Lucia's symbols: the eyes within a cup, a palm, symbol of the victory over death, and the crown, symbol of martyrs.

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23yTb7C6cG9EqjE7VbhG7WASB2jvpkrNQGLNpLGXipgByoygFKjQ9fxpHKEk9CTHH53ZD.jpg

You can see a bunch of "ex voto" attached to the wall around the icon of Santa Lucia: those are called "ex voto per grazia ricevuta", which is a symbol of gratitude shown through attaching a plaque with the symbol of the saint or representing the part of the body healed by the saint, and so it's precisely called "gratitude for favors received".

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23yJJTLYumKB3CQsHc7aKDLhVaZSAQwwvAT1XGP3HraVHXfYVZbZE2iCYnxVAV5zMtxRm.jpg

However, the real peculiarity of this church is not the upper level, but the lower level where the cemetery is. Here the cult of the "anime pezzentelle", the souls lost, is still brought about by some people and still visible in the objects, ex voto, and skulls of this cemetery. The story is a little elaborated, but it's super interesting and I was very shocked when the guide said it all!

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23tRzVx7BPH7NNdYNN7HC1ZwACFhpnCn9j7fDSL88UY8bfkWSdumw1ge1DNSL3ZXRDwfG.jpg

When the city cemeteries started to be banned, the Naples people were pretty concerned about how to pray their dead relatives, especially because they needed a kind of physical tie with the person dead, not only with the soul. Especially after the plague epidemic of 1656 in Naples, the bodies of the victims were brought together and buried out of the city, in the most unknown and fast way in order to make it hard for the plague to keep spreading. In this way, the cult of the dead souls began to be untied from the prayers over the body, as the body itself of the victim was pretty lost. From the Naples people's perspective, there was one way only to pray for their relatives now that they are "lost" and buried who-knows-where: to pray for someone else's dead relative and hope that somebody else will do the same. But what kind of prayer was that? To pray for the lost soul, "l'anima pezzentiella", was a way for the Naples' people to ask God to admit that soul in Paradise; in turn, that soul would intercept in Paradise trough the saints and God for the person who prayed in first place. This way, your requests will be accepted on Earth thanks to the interception in Paradise. I know it sounds very contorted, but this is how the cult of the "anime pezzentielle" works. As I said, it is very "physical", so the way you carry on the cult is by praying over the dead body, or the remaining of an unknown person, an unknown soul: you could see the skull or may be the bones, and pray over them. In the church of Santa Luciella many bones and skulls of the original art corporation of pipernieri are buried and still visibile there, so people would worship those bones and skulls as anime pezzentielle; some people still do worship the cult today, even though the Catholic Church officially banned this cult because it is completely untie by any real religious and holy beliefs, but instead it's very much related to superstition and unholy beliefs. It is, according to the Vatican rules, as if you were praying for a person who in life could have been a murdered or could have made very bad deeds, since there is not possibility to know who he was before dying. The most striking skulls visible at the cemetery of Santa Luciella is the "skull with the ears", which has always been very worshipped because it's believed to have these "ears" that would listed very carefully to the people's requests and prayers. However, the real scientific reason why this skull has this deformity in the area of the ears is because of the atmospheric agents, and the humidity which deformed the bones of the skull throughout the decades and centuries. But as the guide said, it's not necessary to know the scientific truth if you are a strong believer and worshipper of the cult of the anime pezzentielle. Cray, no?

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23u6BgrXh4ufBHjT2L6cr9FYjwhfTpsrie7ykbMtZH4AYwcDY7QpkZUS7RUQfjJKwhHkN.jpg

Napoli Sotterranea

Did you know of the existence an underground Naples?

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23tRximjXJqeB234UpfpqhB246Fck49KkRjbBdMwtzb7dkM8YoBoSAJ294Dx9fC6zo9wx.jpg

I want to end this story by showing you some shots I took at the guided tour of Naples underground, an amazing place of darkness, charm and superstition all combined together and brought about by history and traditions.

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23tkozV9qKeemB6dGURfamzVd9gnoHAGuzoBztHLHTDg9KULa9JFGppmzV1Q7CE72xccr.jpg

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23tvD5wPZtPKScZmcSvF2bh4gwvcPaRFUuhhWMsBnhDy1Vw1DypuxiUi4UuGcbpUeYcsq.jpg

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23uQhyXu9JtgLXxRKwjBkE3BAxRhxCHsL1CCDh88YczXZ1J9BXhStx6xmAcvhrZg3Qu6h.jpg

Underground Naples was originally shaped by the Greeks and Romans who used to collect rain water in tanks.

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23yTb7C6cG9EqjE7VbhG7WASB2jvpkrNQGLNpLGXipgByoygFKjQ9fxpHKEk9CTHH53ZD.jpg

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23yJJTLYumKB3CQsHc7aKDLhVaZSAQwwvAT1XGP3HraVHXfYVZbZE2iCYnxVAV5zMtxRm.jpg

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23tRzVx7BPH7NNdYNN7HC1ZwACFhpnCn9j7fDSL88UY8bfkWSdumw1ge1DNSL3ZXRDwfG.jpg

Pazzesco, no?

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23u6BgrXh4ufBHjT2L6cr9FYjwhfTpsrie7ykbMtZH4AYwcDY7QpkZUS7RUQfjJKwhHkN.jpg

Napoli Sotterranea

Sapevi dell'esistenza di una Napoli sotterranea?

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23tRximjXJqeB234UpfpqhB246Fck49KkRjbBdMwtzb7dkM8YoBoSAJ294Dx9fC6zo9wx.jpg

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23tkozV9qKeemB6dGURfamzVd9gnoHAGuzoBztHLHTDg9KULa9JFGppmzV1Q7CE72xccr.jpg

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23tvD5wPZtPKScZmcSvF2bh4gwvcPaRFUuhhWMsBnhDy1Vw1DypuxiUi4UuGcbpUeYcsq.jpg

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/flewsplash/23uQhyXu9JtgLXxRKwjBkE3BAxRhxCHsL1CCDh88YczXZ1J9BXhStx6xmAcvhrZg3Qu6h.jpg
