It feels like Carl Finlow should have much more mainstream recognition than he actually has. Alongside Ralph Lawson, he was a pivotal figure in the early days of iconic Leeds institutions Back To Basics and 20:20 Vision. Under a plethora of aliases--such as Random Factor, Wulf'n'Bear, Wulf'n'Flow, Urban Farmers--his unique stamp on house music defied the templates laid out from over the Atlantic.

In the years away from the Leeds scene, he focused on more electro orientated work under his own name, plus that of Voice Stealer and Silicon Scally. While not headline grabbers, his material is championed by many a DJ. This is reflected in the large collected works double packs issued earlier this year, allowing you a moment to catch up on all the secret battle weapons that you have missed.

Carl's latest release sees him gracing another workhorse of the scene. Central Processing Unit is a singularly focused imprint from Sheffield, opting to embrace the city's rich heritage in electro and warehouse bleep. Electro is particularly in vogue at the moment, being one of those evergreen genres that never particularly goes out of fashion.

Finlow's stamp on the genre is unique: often electro plays to type, easy to distinguish the sound but difficult to identify a personality behind it. A Carl Finlow record in unmistakable, eschewing familiar sonic templates in favour of a battle tested and personal sound.

*'Projections'* features this sound from cover to cover. You'll hear his penchant for growling bass lines on *'Rift' *and *'Overide'*, the wilting melodies of *'Thermal Image'*, and evoked memories of Kraftwerk on the title track itself. It feels distinctly digital in terms of construction, an observation rather than a complaint. It is as equally tightly executed as the genre often prescribes, but the timbre is distinctly widescreen when compared to its skeletal analogue brethren.

*'Projections' *goes a great way towards putting both Finlow and Central Processing Unit at the forefront of top releases of the year. It is time for dues to be paid.
