One major difficulty in starting a business is finding a very good location. Not all business owners are able to afford buying a landed property for their business, in fact majority of the businesses lease or rent spaces so business activities can commence.

Let me make something straight clear that not all businesses need a great location to start. The location of a business should be dependent on the nature of the business. Businesses where you have to go to the customers, rather than vice versa do not really need an amazing location since you go to find your customers, do business and deliver it to them. In most cases your customers do not care about the location of the business provided they are getting their services rendered to them. In cases where the business involves retailing, marketing, advertising, etc. where customers will have to come in and go out often, then you need a great location with people always on the move.


When starting your business you need to consider the location you want your business to stand it will be part of your capital expenses if you are buying or leasing and it will be the center for customer’s attraction.

In considering the location where your business will stand a few things needs to be checked.

* Population: population is an important factor to check before deciding the location of a business. Are there people living, working or travelling through the location where your business want to be located and are this people willing to support your kind of business? Do people pass through the business location? Do similar businesses in the environment thrive or do they close down after a few month or years? This are the necessary questions to ask yourself.

* Competition: When getting a location for your business, it is entirely wrong to cite it in the midst of several competitions. Having one can be considerate, also studying the way your competitors get their customers and bringing a killer tactics is important.

* Visibility: never cite a business in a place where it will not be seen. Make sure your business location is a place where people always pass through and a signpost will do a lot of difference in creating awareness. 

* Facilities: Never open a retail store in a place where there will be no parking space, or toilet. Facilities such as outdoor space, lighting, toilet and bathroom for staffs and customers as well as other necessary facilities are needed.

* History: Never make the mistake of leasing or buying a place with bad reputation. Memories are very difficult to erase from the mind of humans and it will be hard to overcome preconceived notions about the place.

* Rent: For business owners who will be renting or leasing the location, never rent a location at an amount higher than your perceived revenue. The location needs to be as cheap compared to your revenue but not a bad location.

* Security: Lack of security for customer’s properties such as cars, bikes and other things as well as lack of security for your business such as an insurance can be very detrimental. Always try to make sure the location has a level of security before deciding on bringing your business to the location.

* Rate of expenses on businesses: When getting a location for your business, be sure to make research on how much other businesses pay for utility, tax, and other hidden fees (Maybe parking space fee).


* Room for expansion and growth: Be sure the environment will thrive and grow in few years from when you arrive there, and be sure it will be able to accommodate your business when it grows bigger.

* Easy access for employees and supplies/products.

* Environmental issues

* Easy and always responsive landlord/agents in cases of renting.

Many business mistakes can be easily corrected as the business goes on but bad location is often related to business closure because that is the only way to correct it. In other to avoid such thing, it is advisable to get a good location for your business.
