A new initiative to reduce (plastic) garbage

We humans produce an enormous amount of garbage. The vast majority of it is collected and dumped of burned. But also a lot of the garbage ends up in the water; the lakes, rivers and oceans.
Despite initiatives to recycle things like plastics, paper, glass, cans, etcetera, there is still a lot of garbage left.
One of the main reasons for this is that manufacturers keep putting their products in plastic packages. And the often soft plastics are not recyclable, so they need to be stored or burnt.
Last week I saw a (paper) box of tea. The box was sealed in plastic. When I opened the box every teabag was also sealed separately.

As I mentioned before there are some good initiatives. For instance in The Netherlands we pay a deposit when we buy drinks in plastic. When you return the empty bottles to the store you will get the deposit back.
And @tobetada just posted a blog today about the paper straws at Mc Donalds (https://www.proofofbrain.io/hive-150329/@tobetada/my-last-straw#@tobetada/re-friendlymoose-qxzln4) which inspired me for this blog.

One of the latest initiatives my wife discovered is a company called "Pieter Pot". Pieter-Pot is a packaging-free online supermarket. At Pieter Pot they put everything in a jar (pot=jar). By using these recyclable glass jars they have created a zero-waste circular economy.
Even some big food producers like Heinz and Haribo are working together with Pieter Pot to sell their products in glass jars.
Reusing jars costs even less energy than recycling packages.
The company made packaging-free shopping both easy and sexy (as they call it).

The demand is growing and we were placed in a queue before we could order, but finally yesterday the first pots arrived. And this is how our pantry looks like now.

As you can see we have cookies, pasta, cereal, raisins, but also tea, peanut butter, sprinkles, candies, herbs, compostable coffee cups etc. You name it and they have it.

When the pots are empty you can order new products and they will pick up the empty ones for you.
One of the downsides is that these jars do take in more space than the old packages. And it's also a bit more expensive, but reducing your carbon footprint comes with a price.
For now we're quite enthusiastic about this.
