After the '96 gun confiscation program, the homicide rate in Australia went up. Then it followed a slow downward trend that is seen globally. [Source](https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/AUS/australia/murder-homicide-rate)

The United States put tens of millions of guns into the hands of civilians every year yet the homicide trend line is similar to Australia's. The same trend line can be found in many countries. Gun control doesn't save lives. Most likely a reduction in lead in gasoline and paint lowered the homicide rates. Removing guns doesn't make people less homicidal.

The story you wrote is sad. So are stories about children dying in car accidents. Sad things happen all the time. If a criminal breaks into my house in the middle of the night, I want it to be their family telling a sad story, not mine.

America's 2nd amendment isn't about hunting, sport, or even self defense. It's about citizens' ability to protect themselves from governments. Passing laws that make firearms only accessible to the elite, or only for sporting purposes goes against the intent of that amendment. Australian style limitations on firearm ownership are not an option in America. The intent is for civilians to prevent people like Trump and Biden from going too far towards tyranny. We won't give that up easily.
