The main markers for the start of the Anthropocene include changes in CO2 levels, pollen, radiation and the extinction of species. There is overwhelming arguments supporting that we are currently in the Anthropocene, and that we have not yet seen the end of the Anthropocene era. It is not unlikely that the extinction of man will be the most prominent marker of the end of the Anthropocene era, even though the Anthropocene could just as likely continue for hundreds of years after the extinction of man, since many of the ways in which we affect the earth is irreversible. Although man could become nothing more than a bystander of earths destruction or major changes to the planet through events that have nothing to do with mans historic influence on the planet, i.e. meteor showers, mega-eruptions or other phenomena that so far is out of our control. Potential markers for the start and end of geological periods should be measurable also a vast amount of time after the geological period has ended, they should be possible to date, and they should be comparable. Such potential markers include fossils, changes in DNA-sequencing due to to geological changes. Traceable triggers in inter-relationships between the planets fundamental parts is of course important to recognize, such as the core and the tectonic plates, the atmosphere, the body of water, external/internal radiation, behavior of organic material (i.e. homo sapiens), etc. Considering the vast scientific strides man has taken in resent time, I believe that future methods of analysis will find many more markers by searching in the cosmos as well as the micro-cosmos. Future technologies will of course answer many more questions an lead to new artifacts of the Anthropocene era.

One of those artifacts (not a marker) could quite possibly lead to the the consequential and actual start of the Anthropocene era, by literally averting the extinction of man. A true marker of shifting geological eras could therefore be organic life level of resilience, cognitive capacity or one could even say consciousness. This kind of marker would be relevant for earlier eras, even if organic life mainly consisted of single-celled organisms. This marker/factor had not yet become significant enough to have any relevant impact on the planets geology until our current era, and hopefully the following era of mankind.
