Atari will always be remembered as one of the most successful video game companies at the beginning of the 80s with its brand new Atari 2600, however with the passing of the years due to bad decisions and the great crash of video games in 1983 the company it declined both in quality of products and in sales, several times I try to overcome in the market with different consoles which were successors of the 2600, this time we will talk about one of the consoles that was determining the next end of this company, the Atari 7800 ProSystem.

The project of the 7800 began just by 1983, the company Atari through several surveys that made the gamers of that time could establish the conclusion that they wanted a powerful console capable of processing the most advanced graphics possible, so who decided to make this console with a 6502C processor which was adapted for this video game console (this processor was used in the computers of that time) with a power of 1.79 Mhz, enough to be able to unwrap 8-bit graphics.

When they finished their first model, they decided to show it to the public at the Consumer Electronics Show in 1984, attracting the attention of many players since it was really a powerful console for the time, Atari also wanted to compete with two video consoles that were separating their company from the market, the ColecoVision and Intelivision, knew perfectly that the best way to show off their power was with games, in this way in the electronic show they showed 10 games that were very famous in Arcades among them Ms. Pac Man, Pole Position II, Centipede, DigDug and Desert Falcon.

After this peculiar presentation Atari enters into different conflicts which prevented him from mass manufacturing the 7800, so they remained inactive for more than 1 year, at that time two great gaming giants were excited to join the American video game market , Nintendo and Sega, so Atari stayed away from these companies, denying any help they requested (especially from Nintendo), simply wished that their 7800 could be sold very well to recover ground in the market.

After arriving at various agreements between the different problems that Atari had in 1985, he began to massively produce his 7800, to finally launch it on the market in 1986, only that at that time they were no longer competing with their two exclusive rivals. Sega arrived with his Master System and Nintendo with his Nes, but this was not an impediment for Atari to launch its console which ensured an incomparable power.

There was a big factor that caused very low sales for Atari, this was the innovation, Sega and especially Nintendo did a good job with its marketing and console design, pretty eye-catching controls, games that had never been seen and of excellent quality, additionally the launch catalog of these consoles was quite striking and impressive for the gamers of that time, in return Atari opted again for the traditional system of Joysticks, apart from that their video games were practically a recycled from their previous consoles or they did not have a new addition to make a wake-up call to users.

Despite this many users will look for the 7800 for its great retro compatibility with the cartridges of the large 2600, although this had a small sacrifice on the part of the developers, they had to place the same sound chip that used their first console, so that in this aspect was not something innovative compared to the great competition, in addition its control could be exhausting in some occasions, due to its design which could cause fatigue for long sessions.

The Atari 7800 from its launch date until 1992 only sold more than 4.3 million units, this gives us to understand that they did not have the success that they expected, however, for Atari it was not yet the end, they had up their sleeves a new video game console which would be his last attempt to obtain that first place which belonged to them, but we will see it in a next occasion in the great history of the world of videogames.
