It was nearly one o clock and she just lay there for a few minutes to decide whether she had to check it out. It could have just been her imagination, but her overactive imagination ran away with her.

She could see the newspaper headlines already:

Young single woman killed by a serial killer in grandfather’s house.

"Stop it Dominique, it was probably just a rat or a squirrel." She thought to herself.

The house was dead silent, and after a few minutes when she did not hear anything, she turned around to go back to sleep, only to be staring at the wall for half an hour. She was completely awake now, and it was no use to even try and go back to sleep.

She heated up some warm milk and took a seat in the old wing back chair her grandfather used to love so much. She can clearly remember sitting on his lap hours, while he told her stories about his younger days.

Dominique woke up when the sun peeked through the curtain. She could’ve sworn she heard someone giggle, but she knew she must have been dreaming. She made a strong pot of coffee and went to get dressed. Her furniture was to arrive sometime today, and it was going to be very tiresome day.

She decided to start cleaning the kitchen so she could at least cook for herself. Living on fast food was just not her thing, and she really enjoyed cooking. After an hour of scrubbing, the kitchen was sparkling clean. She needed a break and grabbed her handbag to dig for the packet of cigarettes.

She knew it was a bad habit, but it kept her calm. She quit a while ago, but when Tom left her, she needed something and she started smoking again.

She took her coffee, ashtray and her cigarettes and found a seat on the stairs outside on the porch. She was just about to light up a cigarette, when she heard a weird sound coming from the attic. It sounded much like the noise she heard the night before. She dropped everything and quickly ran upstairs to get to the attic.

She pulled down the ladder as quietly as possible and climbed up the stairs towards the attic. The door creaked terribly, and Dominique struggled to open the door. It was stuck, and she had to use full strength to get it open. If anyone had been hiding upstairs, the terrible racket would have chased them away by now.

Dominique stepped inside the attic and looked around.

"There is more stuff in here than I thought, this is going to take a few days of sorting." She thought to herself.

Plenty of boxes were stacked up on the one side and there were bookshelves full of old books on the other. In front of her was an old chest of drawers and many suitcases piled up on top of it. What fascinated her the most was the old trunk standing in the one corner.

On the opposite side was a large window and the sun lit up the room. She could see every inch of the room, but with the large number of boxes stacked up to the roof, it would be the ideal hiding place for anyone.

"Come out come out wherever you are..." she whispered and then shrieked when a bird flew up and escaped through the broken side window. There was definitely no one up there.

She laughed at herself for even being so scared. There was nothing up here, except old stuff and dust. The attic has not been cleaned in over twenty years, and perhaps even longer. She never came up here as a child, and it was only later as a teenager that she discovered that the attic even existed.

Dominique sat down on one of the chairs after using a piece of clothing to dust it. Clouds of dust caused her to sneeze terribly and she knew she had to get out before she had some kind of asthma attack. She caught a glimpse of herself in the full-length mirror next to the chair and could see that her eyes were already red and swollen and the sneezing wasn't going to stop soon.

She shook off her jeans and then turned around to climb down the stairs. She never saw the pair of blue eyes staring back at her in the mirror.

She climbed down in such a hurry that her foot slipped on the ladder. Luckily, she kept her balance and landed on her feet, safely in the hallway.

"Perhaps some fresh air would do the trick." Dominique thought and dived into her handbag again looking for an allergy tablet. She swallowed it with the cold coffee still standing on the porch, and nearly spit it out because of the horrible taste.

“The first place that needs cleaning is the attic.” She thought to herself.

She made fresh coffee and lit a cigarette on the porch. She didn’t hear anything in the attic again and was just about to go back inside when she saw the truck with her furniture coming down the road.

It took nearly four hours for them to unload all her stuff, and when the finally left, the house was a total mess. Most of the boxes were stacked in the dining room, but she had plenty of time to sort those out.

For now, she just wanted to get to the store to cook herself a proper meal tonight.

She made a quick note on her cell phone of everything she needed to buy and grabbed her keys. She was out the door in minutes, and as she drove into town, she thought about how hard she fought to get away from here.

Leah had such big dreams, and all she wanted to do was to get away from this little town. Dominique knew now that she never should have left and realized now that it had been the biggest mistake of her life.

The town did not change much. She saw the familiar old diner and made a mental note to go try one of their milkshakes at some point. She and John her boyfriend from school used to share milkshakes all the time and she secretly wondered what happened to him. She knew she broke his heart, and she nearly stayed in town because of him, but in the end, Leah convinced her that it was not worth staying.

She found a parking close to the supermarket and locked her car. She had to walk past the bakery and if by remote control she let her nose lead her inside. There was nothing better than the smell of freshly baked bread, and she bought enough rolls to last her for a few days.

She locked the rolls in her car and went to buy the rest of the things on her list. When she walked inside the supermarket that familiar feeling of Déjà vu hit her right between the eyes. Nothing really changed and it felt good to know where everything was.

She quickly found what she needed and after she paid, pushed the trolley outside to her car. She was tired, and in a hurry to get home, but when she looked up, she saw someone looking familiar standing at her car.
