At first glance it seems as though someone would have to be interested in baseball in order to enjoy this film but it really isn't about that.  It is about performance enhancing drugs in sports and that, for some people, is far more entertaining.

Direct Billy Corben (not to be confused with Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins) has a very captivating way of presenting his films and apparently he had a blockbuster called "Cocaine Cowboys" that was done in the same style.  I'll check that out.  For the "dramatizations" he uses child actors and presents the scenes in a comedic way - I think this works much better than trying to find adult body doubles because so often, that ends up being dumb.

The film focuses on a rather creative man named Anthony Bosch who was able to land some pretty high-profile customers in the P.E.D. business that he was running out of Miami.  You can't really call Anthony a "con man" because he programs actually DID work, and technically they were NOT criminal.   Using steroids, after all, is not illegal.  It just kind of depends on how you get them and since Bosch is not an MD, this is where he was breaking the law.  He was acquiring testosterone and steroids on the black market and also by using his father's prescription pad.  

The medical regimen that he prescribed actually worked very well and was able to get past all the anti-doping tests that various sports programs implemented provided the players took the dosages exactly like Anthony said.  It should come as no surprise that they did not do so and got caught.  

The high profile baseball players that were Mr. Bosch's customers included Manny Ramirez and of the highest paid baseball player of all time Alex Rodriguez.

You don't have to like baseball to find this interesting because it exposes drugs in sports and that is interesting enough, right?  Also, there is some information to suggest that MLB actively tried to cover-up the drugging trend that was going on at the time.  You have to keep in mind one major thing that is going on here and that is that it is technically not illegal for these guys to be doing this - it is considered unfair - just like in the Tour-de-France, for example.

Brilliantly presented and fast-paced, the producers of Screwball do a wonderful job of also presenting all sides of the debate in this one.  They don't take a side and try to convince you that they are correct.  They have all sides of the story and you get to make up your mind about who you want to believe... you know, like journalists are supposed to do.

This is the best made documentary I have seen in quite some time and therefore it gets the highest stamp of approval in existence.
