The largest church in the city can be seen and one of the largest hall churches in Thuringia is the gothic St. John's Church, the Protestant church of Saalfeld. The market pharmacy, until 1992 in the possession of the Arndt family, in a massive residential tower of 1468, today's market pharmacy was in the Middle Ages the first seat of the city civic. The town hall on the market square was built after the fire of 1517 in the period between 1529 and 1537 and is considered one of the most important Renaissance town halls in Thuringia. Amtsgrappen "Hutschachtel" The tower-like rotunda was built as a prison according to the plans of the Meining land builder Carl Rudolf Tröger from 1857 to 1859 and cost 14500 guilders. On November 25, 1859, the transfer was made as an official prison to the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen. Until 1950, it was still used as a prison by the National Socialists and later by the Soviet military administration. In 1973, the city of Saalfeld took over the building and used it after the reconstruction as a city archive.
